I’m in relatively good shape. I started excercising regularly about 2 years and lost some weight. My cardio/conditioning are excellent, but I’d still have some fat around my middle to get rid of. So I hired a personal trainer.
I had my first session Tuesday and Mohammad eating a pork chop, my legs are sore! I feel like I ran ten miles in a failed attempt to escape the prison sodomy team.* I’m paying for this? Apparently I have a hidden masochistic streak.
*(I exagerate slightly. Mostly my thighs and glutes are just sore and stiff and protest when I’ve been sitting too long, there’s not any actual pain)
From the title I thought this was another thread about the cost of membership here at the dope
If you don’t mind my asking, how much did it cost? I’ve thought about doing this very thing.
$140 a month for 6 months. But I imagine it varies, and like many such things you have to negotiate a bit. I think they started out at $160 as the ‘list price’. I imagine this is the sort of thing that varies quite a bit with location.
Or, as I like to put it, “marriage”
Personal trainers are fine, if you can afford it, but you don’t need them. Just follow one around, and do what he does to OTHERS he trains.
Just don’t be obvious about it, keep your distance and watch when he trains others or works out him/herself
I view personal trainers like flying first class. It’s worth it only if you can afford it.

The one very VERY important exception to this is if you are determained to work out with free weights.
If you want to use free weights and you’re new, get a personal trainer. You’re going to hurt yourself. I have seen so many broken toes and chipped teeth because people don’t know how to handle a free weight. For the price of a chipped tooth you can pay for a few personal training sessions. So if you insist on free weight, get a personal trainer to show you how to do this safely
