How much do the average personal trainers make? I am referring to the ones in everyday health clubs not exclusive clubs or personal trainers that come to your house or whatever. Just the regular trainers that you would find at the YMCA, Anytime Fitness… And when you pay the fitness center for the trainer how much does the club get and how much does the actual trainer get? What education does it take to become a trainer, how long are the programs and who certifies a trainer?
At our gym, you’d pay just under $60 per hour to work with a trainer. (Think they charge $55)
I’d be surprised if the trainer got a third of that.
As for certifications, there’s a whole box of Alpha-Bits involved. On a quick search, I found IFPA (International Fitness Professionals Association), IACET (International Association for Continuing Education and Training), NOCA (National Organization for Competency Assurance), NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies), PFIT (Professional Fitness Instructor Training), NFPT (National Federation of Professional Trainers, and that’s just on the first page of a Google search.
If you’re thinking of getting into the business, check with your local gyms and clubs to see what certifications and/or memberships they require, then go from there.
My buddy, a newly minted trainer, makes 30 bucks an hour.
When I joined YMCA I think I paid about $52 per hour-long session, but that’s because I got a package of 12 or something - it was more per session if you paid for fewer sessions up-front or one at a time which IIRC was closer to $60 per hour.
After going to my guy for about 6 months or so, he offered to charge me $40 if I paid him directly on the down-low instead of going through the Y, which was a better deal for both of us. Yeah, it is against the rules, but I pay a substantial monthly fee, and I would prefer that more of my money go directly to my trainer.
