PC gamers: Try the XIII demo yet?

Oh lord. Talk about a game just oozing style. Haven’t seen a game with this much style since Grim Fandango. Anyway it’s a cel-shaded graphic novel-style FPS from Ubisoft. Great jazz soundtrack. It’s actually based on some french graphic novel. It’s a must see if you like FPS and/or graphic novels.

I was just playing it last night, actually. Pretty cool. Then I downloaded the Tron 2.0 demo. T’hell with XIII! XIII don’t have lightcycles!

(I’ll probably still end up buying 'em both, though.)

Lately, I’ve been more into FPS games with less scripting and more RPG elements (Deus Ex 2 is the one I’m waiting for). That said, the unique style of XIII drew me in. Particularly liked the visual “tap…tap…TAP” warning you of approaching enemies.

Hmmm…I was just over at Gamers Hell in another window looking for a demo to download.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll let you know what I think later.

I gave it a spin.

You are right the music was cool. I am a big fan of ultra-realism in an FPS such as the Rainbow Six stuff or Splinter Cell or even Wolfenstein to some extent. Needless to say, I was underwhelmed by the whole comic book style presentation. My main bitch was the hit system. Many times a target was far enough away that your reticle cmpletely covered him. Accurate hits were not possible. It seemed somewhat random if a shot would hit even though the reticle was on. Probably that one thing alone is enough to ruin it for me.

That said, it did have a very nice style just as you said in the OP. Interesting approach to the FPS genre thats for sure.

Neat game. I rather liked the style.

I’ve probably put more hours into the Rainbow Six line of games than any other. Mostly in Rogue Spear though all the latest incarnations are also by Ubisoft. I can’t stand games that don’t have a one headshot/one kill system anymore. Luckily this game has that. I thought the hit/collision system was actually pretty good. There was that one part on the beach where the targets were pretty far away but watching them fall off the cliff in a different frame was priceless.
