- I think my sound card just died. Is there anything I can do with Win98 to test it and be absolutely sure? Nothing that normally makes noise does now. And assuming it has, are sound cards easy to change? I need my computer for school homework; I can’t have it sitting in a repair shop for a week. - MC
Try the following: Go to…
START
SETTINGS
CONTROL PANEL
SYSTEM
DEVICE MANAGER (tab)
Look for a little yellow circle with an exclamation (!) in it or a red circle. Specifically you want to look for Sound, Video and Game Controllers in that list. Click on the + sign next to it and you should see your sound card listed. Highlight it and click on the Properties button. This should tell you if anything is wacky.
As for changing the card it’s not too bad of a process if you’re comfortable cracking your case open, removing and installing a new card. Any card you buy should have detailed instructions on installation. You can also always call tech support for help if you don’t mind waiting 45 minutes to talk to someone. All in all I’m betting you could handle it just fine.
Good luck…

- Well nuts. Somebody messed with the volume control and unchecked the “wave” slider. The help don’t say exactly that it’s gotta be on. . . . and by the by, how come (my) bass and treble sliders are disabled? Is that a feature particular to different sound cards? I note that many PC speakers have bass and treble control knobs anyway. - MC
