IMHO, yes. It was my favorite DC series until Peacemaker came along. Now it’s a close call.
It’s seriously weird. Just, really, really, weird. I liked the first two seasons, but they’ve kind of lost me in the third season. When the series began, the weirdness seemed (to me) to be organic to the stories. As the series has progressed, and especially in S3, it’s seemed to me that they’re just being weird for the sake of being weird, and I’ve lost interest.
Like Peacemaker, It does have a lot of comedy, but the comedy is absurdist or surrealist, and it’s a lot denser.
The juvenile jokes by themselves aren’t really funny, but in context I think they are because of what they reveal about the mindset of the characters.
Another vote for Doom Patrol. (On the other hand, Titans is terrible.)
It annoyed me that his whole character is “I don’t care how many people I have to kill to get peace” and then they show him unable to kill the kids. That would have made sense – a normal grunt might hesitate, but not borderline-psychopath Peacemaker. Alas, they neutered his whole schtick.
But I don’t think his shtick is being a psycho – his shtick is that he thinks of himself as an unstoppable, uber-patriotic warrior for peace, when in reality he’s an unstable manchild with low self-esteem and daddy issues who’s trying to make up for it all by being the toughest guy around.
I thought this was addressed in the following episode though; we find out he was probably full of shit, at least in part.
D’oh, haven’t watched that one yet.
Also, he’s having a crisis of conscience ever since he killed Rick Flagg in the Suicide Squad movie.
Given that its basically Suicide Squad, and the stakes…its genuinely tense and its very good cause anyone can die, and im very invested when : (EG)
Episode three and the non-costumes have to go in and finish the mission and are stymied by…a door.
Nitpick: Who directed Vigilante to be an off-brand Deadpool? i feel for the actor cause they’ve changed course from his comic character so much…it doesn’t give the guy any groundwork.
“You’re goofy, and you idolize Peacemaker…annnnnd…you know, just make it your own.”
I mean they even made his torture comical. I felt more for the secret service agent then i did for the guy whose balls are being electrocuted.
I’d consider him more like Kick-Ass.
I commented to one of my daughters that it would’ve been funny if Vigilante turned out to be Ryan Reynolds.
I did not have high expectations for this series. I loved The Suicide Squad, but I considered Peacemaker to be a one-joke structure that hélas been adequately told and would get tiresome if used more.
But I just watched the first few episodes and I’m really pleasantly surprised. They have taken the trouble to really write this out. And John Cena’s absolute straight sincerity completely sells this ridiculous character.
First few episodes have been well written and decently performed. Quite entertaining.
Also, man I gotta love the sex and nudity in a superhero movie. We saw full frontal penis in the movie and here we got topless and close up genital female nudity. Nice.
And I don’t get the weird anachronistic 1980s vibe permeating the setting but I like it. Makes it sort of surreal and timeless.
I take it you haven’t been watching Titans or Doom Patrol?
Kite Man confirmed to exist in the Peacemakerverse.
Why yes, I believe it will.
Yes I have. I also have been watching the Harley Quinn animated series. And I don’t recall any of them showing full-on genital nudity.
Is Eagly the best-rendered CGI bird ever? For as comical and over-the-top as so much of this show is, Eagly looks way more realistic than he needs to. I’m not complaining - CGI birds tend to take me out of a show or movie. There’s always something just a bit off, usually around the wings. Eagly, however, looks fantastic!
And, I love that Dee Bradley Baker is doing Eagly’s “voice.” Don’t know that you need to have a top-notch voice actor in that role, but I won’t complain.
Eagly is great. I love the way he almost misses his pose at the end of the opening dance.
That whole sequence is just so well done. At the end, they don’t freeze-frame, the dancers just have to hold their poses. And the camera lingers just a biiit too long, and they can’t quite hold them. Including Eagly - they actually CGI animate him trembling a bit. It’s just great attention to detail.
In show, Peacemaker is presumably in his mid-40s and grew up listening to 80s hair metal.
James Gunn created the show and one of his signatures is a distinctive and eclectic soundtrack, similar to the Awesome Mix soundtrack from Guardians of the Galaxy.
@Pavelb1 - I also got a “low budget Deadpool” vibe from Vigilante.
