My policy is never to vote in public polls, but I’ll tell you here that Jif rules. Creamy, never crunchy.
Skippy, Jif, and Peter Pan are all pretty bad. If I was in a store buying peanut butter and those were the only three brands available, I’d go to another store.
I like a basic peanut butter made with just peanuts. No salt, no sugar, no added oil, no corn syrup, no soybeans, no chemicals.
My preferred choice is Wegmans Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter. If I can’t get that, I’ll get Smuckers Natural Chunky or Teddie All Natural Super Chunky (although they both add salt).
No, no, I’ve tried that “natural” peanut butter. Horrid stuff.
Oh no! Where’s the logic in this taste test poll?!
I’m surprised no one has yet mentioned grinding their own special blend of peanuts. I’ve both freshly ground peanuts in Whole Foods (fresh peanuts when the employees are adding new ones really can taste better) and I’ve ground peanuts and other nut butters in a food processor. That’s a whole other thread.
Your secret is safe with me. I won’t tell anyone.
Between the two, I think Jif. That’s what we had for sweetened, processed peanut butter when I was growing up. We also had Adam’s Natural Peanut Butter. I’m not sure why we had both, but we did, and we ate both. They were both good, but different.
In my household we’ve only ever had natural peanut butter and prefer Adam’s over Laura Scudders. (Not that you asked.)
This isn’t a public poll.
It is. Just click on the link in the poll to see who voted for what.
Black Cat.
I tend to get Teddy’s these days, but given the choice, I choose Jif.
I grew up on Skippy, but the ad is right: Jif tastes more like peanuts.
Umm… Jif (now Cif) is / was a household cleaning fluid over here.
Skippy Natural (just peanuts, sugar and oil) and creamy. If I wanted peanuts I would have peanuts.
Never consumed more than a smidgen of either of those two brands. Our house peanut butter when I was growing up was Peter Pan. By the time I was purchasing my own PB, I’d developed a dislike for sugar in my peanut butter and went with the so-called ‘natural’ brands that just had peanuts and salt. Preferably smooth. For a long time that meant an inordinate amount of time trying to get the damn stuff to stir up, but somewhere along the lines someone appears to have figured out the secret to getting it to stay mixed up without a bunch of emulsifiers, and that’s nicer.
Jif, Skippy and Peter Pan are all interchangeable to me. I like them all. I like the whipped peanut butter also, but that’s getting harder and harder to find. I only use smooth - but crunchy is great in peanut butter cookies.
I tried an all natural peanut butter a while back. It was just ok. Never bought it again.
I buy the cheap store brand peanut butter for the dogs (for taking pills). I tried it once and it was actually pretty good. Not much difference from the Big Three.
Sam’s Club was giving out samples of some nut butter. Can’t remember if it was almond or cashew. They spread it on a chunk of wheat bread. I was curious so gave it a try. BLAH - It seemed really dry and also tasteless.
Another vote for natural no sugar varieties.
Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan? Those are peanut flavored cake frosting, nah? I mean, if that’s what you like then go for it! Not intending to be insulting, but for me they fall into the category of kid food, along with: Kraft Mac & Cheese, Hot Dogs, Taco kits, Tater Tots, dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, y’know - stuff from the kids menu in family restaurants.
Like “giraffe”.
There are very definite taste differences between these three peanut butters, even when one starts tasting things with even greater differences, like “natural” peanut butter. They aren’t like American lagers, which are, indeed, completely interchageable.
I’m a choosy mother. I always choose Jif. And always the Crunchy variety.
For myself, that is. I buy the house brand (and creamy) for my dog. Not because he doesn’t deserve the best, but because that way I know I won’t eat his PB and leave him with nothing.
Seriously. Thirty seven posts and nobody has said they can make it better and cheaper at home?
Skippy, damn skippy!
If you’re not growing your own peanuts with legumes which are the direct descendants of those used by George Washington Carver himself, then milling them with 200-year old equipment, you really shouldn’t be in this thread talking about “good peanut butter”.
