Pectoral Implants vs working Out

A plastic surgeon says that for around $6000.00, I can have the torso of my dreams. I thought that I would pose this question to the SMDB universe:
FOR PI’s: fairly low cost, pretty safe, instant results. Against: significant pain, possibility of having to remove later.
Working OUT:
lots of hard work-as much as 12-24 months of daily pain to achieve the look. Cost: around $50-80.00/month.
So which is the best choice-are these implants all they are cracked up to be?

I’d say no, for several reasons, but the main one is related to my grounding in the Puritan Work Ethic (which I’m obviously currently ignoring, since I’m posting here instead of doing my job): You have a greater appreciation for the things you had to work for to obtain.

Do doctors know if there are any negative effects of having your chest inflated with fluid after years of use?

Look at it this way, pectoral implants are like have a Porche 911 Twin Turbo body wrapped around a Chevy Sprint chassis and angine. It may look mean as hell but it is all on the surface. If that is what you want then go for it but if you really want the strength then you must work out to get it.

There is a middle ground and I don’t want to sound like I’m against the cosmetic benefits of the pectoral implants because I’m not. I’m nearing 30 and have been working out since I was 16. I have never been fat because I have a super high metabolism. Right now I take 15 grams of creatine and 40 grams of direct whey protein a day and work my torso four days a week in graduated resistance reps. I can bench my weigh about a dozen times in a minute (I don’t do this anymore as I have learned it is bad for development) and can bench about 40 lbs over my weight a couple of times. I also have the upper body development of a 12 year old boy who chain smokes. I am hard, and when I pump I look really cut or emaciated (depends on who you ask) but I have very little mass in relation to my power. I have considered implants for a number of years and have had one trainer suggest them after working with him for over a year.

If this sounds like you, and you have allready built a strenght that should go with a much greater size then I say go for it, but you probably have not (at least from your description in the OP) tried the nonsurgical alternatives.

At the very least you should try for about a year to develop your torso before getting the surgery. The reason being if you later on decide to work out you might encounter problems because the impants interfere with normal flex. If you have some firm mass when you get the implants done they are coing to actually look better, more natural, and are going to be less likely to interfere with your mobility.

another thing is that you may be able to get big implants buy w/o a toned body backing them up you will look like a cartoon at best. The implants I’m looking at are really quite small (about the size of a 12oz regular chicken breast) and mate well with my general shape. Unless you have 18" biceps and a 20" neck you don’t want’ big pecks. You would look like a freak. I’m going for a body shape similar to Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon. Lean and defined.

Sounds more like an IMHO topic to me. Off you go.

Aw, shit. I came in here hoping to read Gaudere’s opinion of pectoral implants.

…anyway, I’m curious. How much would the science guys charge to implant my brain into an invulnerable robot body named Zontar?

Maeglin-

If you are talking about pectoral implants as opposed to breast implants you might have a misconception. Pectoral implants are not a fluid. They are a shaped silicone form that looks somewhat like parallelagram<SP> and custom shaved to mesh with the person’s torso.

They are not supposed to be dangerous like liquid silicone because they are solid and don’t degenerate and have nothing to “leak” into your bloodstream or glandular system.

But to answer your question as to weather doctors know if they are dangerous (aside from the danger of ANY major surgery), they are supposed to be safe. In fact inthernal prosthesis if the same materials have been in use for as long is silicone breast implants and I have never heard of any problems attributed to the material itself. Hard silicone or semi-hard is nonporous and does not decay so it’s very similar to having a non-growing lypoma (fatty hard tumor) in the subdermis. It’s basically just intert material that makes a lump.

…if you had EVER had abdominal surgery you would NOT have to ask this question. Post-op pain and nausea, possibility of infection and on and on,IMHO elective surgery is , and should be, the very last solution , after having exausted all other options, and having bigger tits doesn’t seem to fit the bill, besides working out should be an end in itself, and adding to the zensters obsevations, how much respect are you going to have for yourself with a pair of storeboughts?..only my .02 tho’

Sorry, Ike. Brains like yours usually get stolen by Marty Feldman before we can get around to it.
To get back to the OP, it seems that if you’re going to get implants without working out at all, not only would it probably look bad, but you might as well tatoo “I am shallow” on your forehead and be done with it.

Benefits of weight training

  1. increased strength
  2. increased metabolism
  3. increased energy
  4. the tremendous ego boost when you start seeing changes in your body’s composition
  5. the tremendous ego boost when you increase the weight you are lifting
  6. decreased risk of osteoporosis (mainly a benefit to women, but I am one)
  7. probably lots of other stuff I’m not aware of, but I am still a novice

Benefits of implants

  1. one part of your body looks better. But frankly, if the rest of your body is flabby, it’s gonna look pretty damn weird.
  2. ummm… sorry, can’t think of any more

That was the bonniest mot I’ve seen here all week, you bastard.

If all you want to do is pick up women with breast implants who’ve had liposuction, then go for it. Otherwise is it really worth it?

I knew I’d learn the secret of this technique if I stuck on the SDMB long enough! Thanks c_goat.

I’m off to the surgeon’s and then to the singles bars… I’ll let you know how it works out for me.

Please do. After posting that I realized that that was what I really wanted as well. (How many times can we use “that” in one sentence?)

If it works I may do it myself
