Pedals is Dead

“Pedals” New Jersey’s famous bi-pedal bear appears to have been killed by a hunter.

Why? Why would any one feel the need to kill this poor guy?

Ddamn that sucks. RIP Pedals.

Because it’s a bear and it’s bear-hunting season. They don’t wear nametags.

I thought it was rabbit season?

No, it’s duck season.

Rabbit season.

Duck season!

Which, apparently, Pedals didn’t do. :frowning:

Elmer season!

Bear season? Because bears is tasty?

How dare someone do something legal that is sanctioned by the state. :frowning:

Just because you can does not always mean that you should.

You could make an argument that no bears should be hunted as game if you like, but that would apply to the hundreds of other bears killed in NJ recently. Pedals was a black bear, they can be legally hunted, and the hunter likely didn’t know he had a name and was considered special.

If he was only known to a few locals and he was on all fours when he was shot, I’d give the hunter a pass.

But…

Where did the hunter come from? Was the hunter a local who does not do any internet media?

Most wild animals turn mean & dangerous if they have been maimed and one like ‘Pedals’ who didn’t should be treasured.

If he was killed and just left out, like he was just killed to be killed, that is not a hunter IMO…Since they seem to know he is dead for sure but don’t know who did it, sounds like the person who did it was not worth as much as the life he took. IMO.

While it saddens me he was probably killed I am also happy for him. Being forced to walk on his hind legs had to or would soon be causing him a lot of pain. A bear’s body just isn’t designed for that.

And then there are those who would say “Why? Why would one feel the need to name and anthropomorphize a wild animal?”

Anybody see Dr. Kristen Lindsey recently?

Is that a typo? A one day bow hunt snagged 430 bears?!? How many bears are there in Northern NJ!?

Quite a lot more than you might imagine. Deer are also rampant, pretty much at nuisance levels.

Fair point. This was a (relatively) merciful death for a large wild animal.

It was a 6 day season, not a single day. The article was poorly worded. Still 430 bears in 6 days is surprising too, considering it’s only bow & arrow and muzzle loading rifle.
