Pence harangued by cast of Hamilton

I must have missed the rebuke. Could you point it out?

It’s distracting to the cast and the audience. They are there to perform and see a play. Though in this case, with this cast and that person, I admit I’d be tempted to join in.

This was after the play during a curtain call.

It was after the performance, wasn’t it? The cast performed the play. Nothing was disrupted. They didn’t refuse him the service he (or somebody) paid for.

I don’t see where’s the “harangue”, either. And besides it was at the curtain call, not in the middle of the performance.

A real political leader would use this as an opportunity to respond with something that adds up to “I know you are worried, but believe me, we don’t intend to harm you, you will see the good we’ll do”. But we don’t have a real political leader. Oh well…

If the expectation is that dissenters should shut up in meek submission before those who won, well, that’s a stupid expectation.

From all reports, some audience members booed and hollered at Pence, not the cast. At the very end of the show (and as Pence was leaving) a cast member made a brief and quite civil statement (during which he asked the audience **not **to boo) asking the VP-elect to essentially work on behalf of all Americans.
As usually happens when one doesn’t like what one’s being told, that statement probably felt like it went on for several minutes but video shows it being less than a minute even when interrupted by applause.
The picture at the link shows Pence had a Secret Service detail and was at no time in danger of having anything but ideas reach him and I expect that going to see *Hamilton *he may have been prepared for that to happen.

In short, the title of this thread is exaggerated and false.

I can’t imagine a more unprofessional reaction to a single member of an audience. Pence was there as a private citizen, seeking entertainment, and bought a ticket like anybody else.

The cast could have spoken to him privately after the show.

This sets a terrible example. Imagine any politician getting harassed in their private life. Salesmen cursing them out, waiters refusing to serve their food. All because they don’t agree with their politics.

That’s not the country we are or ever want to be.

Our new President hasn’t even taken office yet. Give the man a chance before you start hanging nooses from trees.

I stand corrected. The news reports made it seem like it happened during the play.

Yes, after the play is totally fine. As I stated, I’m proud to live in a country where you can criticize the government.

See the above. If Pence came into the store I work at and I cussed him out, my ass would be in the street.

Pence is no longer a private citizen. He wasn’t cursed out, he wasn’t denied entrance to the theater. He was accorded far more courtesy and civility than Obama was by the opposition.

From the Pit thread:

Abraham Lincoln would really, no REALLY, like to argue w/ you on that one.

No matter who you are, when you buy a ticket to a public show, in this case a VERY expensive ticket, you agree to be part of something larger than yourself. In certain cases, you can get hurt, your personal items damaged - any number of things can be indemnified against, all b/c you are not going to be a single, private person for the duration of the event. You are an audience member who’s paying for the privilege.

Oh boo hoo, boo hoo…conservatives treated President Obama with a merciless, often disgusting and racist, continuous stream of disrespect and abuse for 8 years. Trump and his cohorts deserve no less, and, in fact, deserve a lot more. I hope those opposing him make his and Pence’s life a llving hell.

Exactly.

Conservatives really are wimps, aren’t they? They can’t even listen to a sternly worded lecture without starting to tear up.

Meanwhile, they can threaten their political opponents with imprisonment or “second amendment” solutions. And their opponents just shrug it off.

You guys need to grow a pair.

If the cast had any class they would have ignored Pence’s presence. If the cast doesn’t like my suggestion, they can go back to waiting on tables.

When has Obama or any other politician been publicly called out and embarrassed like this?

AFAIK it’s never happened before.

There’s a huge difference in getting criticized during tv interviews and getting called out in a crowded theatre. They wanted to humiliate a guy still sitting in his seat and surrounded by the entire audience.

I’m sure Politicians hear from many upset citizens. But they are more direct one on one conversations.

They were just following Obama’s example of screaming at some poor guy nonstop for several minutes.

Hey, in Trumpistan, truth is whatever falls out of your monkey-lips.

Why ignore someone who’s OK with raping the Constitution?

Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there tell us more Internet Tough Guy!

If you’re embarrassed that someone has to ask you to protect people of all colors, creeds and orientations and you’re already on record as a raging homophobe, perhaps you should stop and engage in a little self reflection.
