Pence harangued by cast of Hamilton

Hilarious. Many Republicans in this country think refraining from calling someone a racial slur is political correctness to be derided and rejected. There are people who claim to have voted for Trump because that would be the end of political correctness entirely. But when it’s Trump or his people or his voters on the receiving end, it’s the end of civilization and good manners.

…he spoke the fucking truth.

The diverse communities of America are alarmed and anxious that the new administration will not protect them, their planet, their children, their parents, or defend their and uphold their inalienable rights. Have you not been following the news?

This is their new reality. And telling the vice-president elect direct to his face that they have these fears but that they hoped that Pence would prove them wrong is an entirely appropriate thing to do. Pence is going to be Vice President of the United States, the most powerful nation in the history of the world. And the Trump Empire is already in a “bubble”: so any opportunity to express the fears of the diverse communities of America directly to the administration MUST BE TAKEN.

And if Pence took that expression of fear as an insult then tough fucking luck. People should not shut up, should not be silent, and should not moderate their behaviour because John Mace thinks they are being insulting. Just compare the carefully chosen words that were used here to the language used by the President elect in response. And explain to me why anyone should be moderating how they communicate with this administration.

(Not an insult, just a comment).
Some people, including the OP, need to look up the meaning of the word ‘‘harangue’’, and actually read it.

Well, they were a BIT classier than Kayne West…so at least there is that.

You are going to hear A LOT more of this. Better get used to it Mr. Pence!

Pence ceased being a private citizen when he became vice-president-elect. If he wanted to be a private citizen he had that option. He chose a different path.

So it’s your opinion that the guy who shamelessly slunk out of the theater while he was being publicly spoken to – and who is notoriously averse to answering direct questions – would have been happy to give a full on-the-record interview to that same individual?

Utter bullshit.

The entire “incident” was filmed by multiple people from multiple perspectives. The address to the VP-elect was entirely respectful, he was addressed as “sir” at all times, and Trump looks like an asshat for demanding an apology because the cast very politely made a statement entirely in accord with their right to free speech to address an elected official. There was absolutely no rebuke in the statement.

Try YouTube and see for yourself rather than take the word of third party who wasn’t even present.

Nope.

If you can’t stand questions or criticisms from the people you allegedly work for you shouldn’t run for public office. It comes with the job.

Wow. A congressman calls the President of the United States a liar on the floor of the House, and no Republican criticizes him. Wonder why.

One wonders where that private citizen got his ticket, when they’re impossible to obtain. And how many Secret Service members got their own tickets, as well?

It wasn’t during the performance, it was after it was over.

BoycottHamilton is trending as a hashtag. Good luck with that. Maybe the rest of the country can actually get tickets if they do.

in what way? Are you talking about the Taylor Swift thing? If so, I don’t think so. it was their show, and they did this during the curtain call.

If Pence wanted to be a private citizen he shouldn’t have run for vice president.

When did actors lose their right to speak their mind openly and in public? They said nothing anyone should be ashamed of.

No one cursed out Pence at this performance (back when he was governor of my state passing hateful, bigoted laws that was a different matter - plenty of loud protests over that.)

No one refused Pence service. No one has ever refused Pence service due to his politics that I am aware of.

Indeed, the cast admonished the audience to treat him respectfully and NOT boo.

Pence was NOT in a private place, he was in a public place called a “theater” watching a public performance with other members of the public.

No, I don’t agree with Pence’s politics. I wanted to recall his bigoted ass when he tried to legalize hate and marginalizing certain minorities in this state. I don’t like the man. I don’t have to. I have every right to state that I don’t like him or his politics. I didn’t like him as governor. I doubt very much my opinion of him will improve over another 4 years.

  1. Pence is NOT our “new President”.
  2. I have lived under Pence as governor for four years - I think I have an idea of how he conducts himself in public office.
  3. No one is “hanging nooses”. As I said earlier, if you can’t stand public criticism and comment don’t run for a public office. Maybe Trump, due to his inexperience, doesn’t understand this but Pence is a career politician.

How about the asshat congresscritter that shouted out “YOU LIE!” during one of Obama’s State of the Union speeches? I’d say that is a LOT more repugnant a heckle.

Did you actually look at a video of the entire thing? Less than a minute. Actually quite respectful. You have to be one hell of a thin-skinny crybaby to find that “humiliating”, unless you think asking a VP-elect to work for all Americans “humiliating” or “disrespectful”.

First of all, no one was “upset”.

Second, Pence got a LOT worse for signing into law the so-called “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” which was really just legitimizing anti-LGBQT and religious bigotry and permitting people to legally deny them service (for real, not imagined) in public places with zero consequences. Fellow Republicans, including the Republican mayor of Indianapolis, found the legislation repugnant called for either repeal or modification. There was at least one recall petition asking to remove Pence from office because of that. Plenty of very public demonstrations against him. Really, why do you think Pence was so eager to jump on Trump’s coattails? There was a very real possibility he couldn’t win re-election even in so red a state as Indiana.

That is all a HELL of a lot more direct than what he got at the end of Hamilton.

In other words - STFU, sit down, and remember your place, which is at the foot of the rich and powerful.

If the people portrayed in the play Hamilton had done that we’d all still be singing “God Save the Queen” and paying taxes to London.

When Patti Smith repeatedly shouted at the audience of which I was a member, “Love one another, motherfuckers!” I thought, the fucking lady has a fucking point. I didn’t ask my daddy to tweet at her.

I STRONGLY suggest that anyone who hasn’t seen a video of the actual event take the minute (really! Only a minute!) to view the actual event itself so you may have first-hand information and not rely on second-party distortions.

And it wasn’t THE PRESS that stirred up the controversy, it was DONALD TRUMP who did so.

I would have applauded.

Then, if possible, given Pence a piece of my mind about how I thought he’d been shit as a governor.

As a Hoosier I’ve had to deal with Pence for the past four years. In response, I signed a recall petition to boot his backside out of his government job. I think that says enough about what sort of job I think he did.

One-sided? He put his religion above the best interests of the state he was elected to govern. He signed the RFRA despite warnings that it would cost our state both money and jobs - which it did. And he still wouldn’t back down. It’s more important to him to impose his religion on the rest of us than to do the job he was elected to do four years ago - represent the best interests of everyone in Indiana.

So, at least in my case, my displeasure with Pence has to do with his actions in governing the state I live in, not with unspecified “fears”.

He wasn’t in his seat. He was on his feet, on his way to the exit. In fact, he was already out the door, but lingered just outside and listened to the statement.
