When it was first popular, I was singing along with it as it played on the radio. Friends were in the car. I loudly sang along with the chorus, “The Mighty Penguin”…thinking those were, indeed, the lyrics.
My friends never let me live that one down, and now every time I hear the song, I think of penguins.
I’d been saying that penguins were funny for so long that finally my friends gave me one for my birthday! Well, they adopted him for me. Here’s a picture!
He’s just like a real kid - the other day he wrote to me for money as he wanted to meet a penguin lady and build a home. I politely refused and never heard from him again.
Penguins!!
I remember going to the zoo when I was little, and seeing the penguins. They would swim around and when I pressed my little mittened hands up to the glass they would come over and try to bite them! It was so fun moving your hands around so they would chase them.
Capetown penguins sing this song
Doo-dah, doo-dah
Boulder Beach is five miles long
Oh the doo-dah day.
Gonna swim all night
Gonna swim all day
I bet my money on the Little Blue
Somebody bet on the Adelie
Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all night.
Check out the link at the bottom of the Little Blue’s page that says “Listen to the call of a Fairy penguin.” That’s some serious snoring!
Have you seen the critter in the HP commercial from Madagascar? They escape the zoo and make it to Antarctica…
The show the wide angle shot of them, the short one slowly lifting its feet, pacing in place as an attempt to stay warm, this is the humor I’m talking about.
Aren’t those penguins supposed to be rather menacing? I remember a trailer in which they are dragging a guy around the corner of a building, after bonking him on the head. And another character says of them “The penguins are psychotic!”
