The problem here is not whether it’s reasonable to ask about a person’s gender or to counter such a question and resist answering.
The problem here is the family’s pressuring the OP over es love life. The gender issue isn’t going to change that dynamic. The OP had to communicate es family and get them to back off on that topic.
