My expectations are low but like a heroin addict looking for the euphoria of that first high, I will dutifully watch whatever they throw up on the screen. If Disney can even do a half ass job of it, I will buy the DVDs. If they can explain away the brain fart comments about midichlorians in a satisfactory manner, I will wear a jedi robe for a week.
That’s mostly because most males in America are white. I HIGHLY doubt that white males are significantly overrepresented among star wars fans compared to other racial demographics.
You know that star wars (like lord of the rings and marvel comic books) is not just for geeks anymore. Heck, its not just for guys anymore.
The movies still target mostly male viewers but there are a lot of Asian star wars fans that have been loyal fans for decades without a lot of racial representation in star wars. I expect the first Asian in a star wars movie will be a woman in a skimpy outfit (probably with a light saber).
And aren’t luke skywalker and hans solo going to be white?
The more I read about this, the more the main issue here seems to be “How dare they treat a black actor as if he were as good as a white one?”.

Purely anecdotal, but traditional fandom–the sci-fi convention crowd, f’rinstance–has always been wildly dominated by white males. That’s changing, finally, and thank Juju. That’s most of the reason Vox “I Blow Goats” Day and his Dribbling Puppies are upset enough they’re willing to try to burn down the Hugo awards.
So yeah, the group of “people who will go watch a Star Wars movie” is probably not too far off overall nation demographics. But the group of “people who really, really love Star Wars?” Still mostly white, mostly male, and skewing older.
“Fandom” is a relatively small subset of the whole audience for a gigantic, mainstream product like Star Wars. The overwhelming majority of people who have or will buy tickets to SW movies have never been to a convention. Star Wars is just mass-market movies and toys to them, not a “canon,” not a culture, not even a topic for charged discussion.
Star Wars hasn’t been “just for geeks” at any time since May 1977.
