I’ve got to admit, Carol, I’m really astonished that you haven’t heard of the fair tax movement. In short, it is a plan that all citizens with income, after various (undefined) deductions and exclusions, should pay an identical percentage of their income as tax. For instance, if the fair tax were 20%, if you make $10,000 a year, after your $3000 standard deduction you would pay $1400 in taxes. If you make $1,000,000 a year, after your $3000 standard deduction and your $990,000 capital gains deduction, you would pay $1400 in taxes.

I, for one, can’t imagine anything more fair.

It is hard for me to take you seriously when you claim to support all of these ideas but cannot be bothered to see if there are others who are trying to make them happen. Just saw Frank above. Deductions allow everyone, regardless, to live just above the poverty level. Anything you make above that is taxed on consumption. Really, you have never heard of this??

No, you’re confusing the Fair Tax with the Flat Tax. The Fair Tax does away with the federal income tax and replaces it with a national retail sales tax.

Fair tax is based on consumption. Flat tax is based on income. I prefer a consumption tax, as it is, by nature progressive.

What is so amazing about this thread, and no doubt the reason for its length, is that the trolls are tag teaming. As soon as one of them gets tired (I’m looking at you star wars ) another jumps in making the exact same assertions and generating the exact same response. 5-10 pages later they get tired, but then someone else dives in to pick up the slack. Where was Carol Stream up 20 pages ago? Letting someone else do the heavy lifting is the answer.

I don’t think I’ve ever interacted with anybody else in this thread before, so no, we aren’t coordinated. And I’m not a troll, I haven’t posted anything I don’t actually believe. I’ve been a lurker for years, and will mostly remain that way after this thread finally dies. Funny co-inkydink, though. Every time one of us decides to get back to real life, or fall asleep, somebody else takes over!
