Permanently banned.

Everyone’s either been kicked out of a place of business and told not to return, ever, or knows someone who has.

Has this ever happened to you? I want some good stories. I also want to know how well-enforced these bans are. Like, Dopers were banned from some bar in New York ages ago. (Maybe in 2002? I wasn’t there, but I went to the Dopefest in 2003 and manhattan was still annoyed by the experience.) Am I totally wrong in my assumption that the bar has by now long forgotten it and would have no problem if people under the name Cecil Adams wanted to reserve several tables?

One sad story that has a mysterious (to me) beginning: Peace Corps Volunteers have been banned from the town of Bran, Romania over Halloween. When I was a PCV in Bulgaria, we got emails before Halloween from the director of Peace Corps Romania reminding us that if we thought it would be fun to go to Bran - which is where Dracula’s castle is - over Halloween, that it was forbidden. Each Peace Corps program is run autonomously and it’s quite unusual to have contact with volunteers in another country, so whatever the hell they managed to get up to there must have been really, really, really bad.

I used to be a manager at a movie theater. On one of my nights off, a teenager apparently came in drunk and caused quite a scene, which ended up with him in handcuffs, and a ban from the theater. About 6 months later, an employee spots the guy at the theater and points it out to a manager who was there that night. He confronted the guy, and then basically told him all was forgiven and enjoy your movie.

It really wasn’t his call to make (that would have been the General Manager’s), but we decided not to make an issue of it.

So basically it’s up to the manager on duty’s discretion. Unless they took a photo, though, I doubt anybody would really remember a year or two down the line.

(Side note, does anybody have a link to the thread discussing said Dopefest banning? I’m interested in what exactly happened.)

I was 86’d from a bar in McKinleyville, CA back in the 70s. Specifically told that if the owner ever saw me anywhere, they would call the cops. It was actually kinda funny…

The place was called Mad River Rose, and it was a dive. It was also a favorite hangout for students at Humboldt State. One night a group of us got kinda rowdy. I think what got management peeved was our not only sparking up joints at our table, but sharing them with the band. When the bouncers came to ask us to leave, we wrapped ourselves around the table and dared them to eject us. They did, table and all. That’s when the fatwa was issued. The place has been closed for years, but I still wonder if the ban is in effect.

When I was in the Air Force in 1965, I was told I was not welcome in several stores in Montgomery AL. We were required to wear our uniforms when going into town. I guess the townspeople didn’t think women should be in the military. It was either that, or the fact that my best friend was a black man.

My husband was taken to the Frys Electronics stores ‘jail’ for saying “What the fuck.” under his breath. He was detained for about 45 minutes, the police were called. When they arrived they told the manager he could be charged with false imprisonment and calling them when no crime had been committed. They left and the manager told hubby he was no longer welcome in the store. We went in the next weekend. He had me ask for that manager. I was told he no longer worked there. We’ve been back many times with no fall out.

Holy shit, someone let a little power go to their head.

I’m intrigued by the idea of a Fry’s Electronics “jail”, too. Did it double as the employee lounge?

Permanently banned…

I hear that a lot, usually on first dates

No, I think it was a storage room. He said it was empty when they took him there and someone brought in a couple chairs. At least they didn’t make him stand in the corner.

A long time ago, when I was just 21, I was banned from a local bar. You see, I had gone in with a group of people after a wedding reception, including the bride, groom, and some family members. For whatever reason, I didn’t have my license on me. I ordered some expensive martini, and it was delivered to me, then almost immediately the bartender came over and demanded to see my ID. I didn’t have it, but my mom and dad vouched that I was 21. Well he said, you cannot drink that drink, and if you do, you are out of here!

So I asked for my $8 back, since I could not consume the drink. He refused and was being very jerkish. I then insisted on my money back. He again refused and called the police.

I immediately left the bar, and was a passenger in the car as we were leaving the parking lot of the establishment when we were pulled over by police and the bartender came out and pointed me out, and I was arrested for “drunk in public.” (By the way, I was not drunk - I had not even been able to drink my drink, hence why I was asking for my money back!)

So I get a lawyer and the day of trial comes, and right before trial, the prosecutor agrees to drop the charges, basically because there was no case. However, the bartender had been subpoenaed as a witness, and was present in the courtroom, so when he heard the case was dismissed and he would not be needed, he was PISSED because he had to show up at 8am, and he works nights, don’t ya know! He called my lawyer a dickhead and almost started a fight with my brother on the way out of court.

So like a year later, I met my friend for a drink at the same bar. Somehow the same bartender recognized me, came up to our table and forced me to leave, saying I was banned; that I forced him to show up in court early in the morning for nothing, and as long as he worked there, I was banned. I still have never been back, and I never did get my $8 back for that unconsumed martini!

I have a friend that is permanently banned from several bars for carrying a concealed handgun. Concealed carry is allowed where he lives, but individual businesses have the option to say no weapons whatsoever on their premises.

Permanently Banned -
A good band name.

I permanently banned a customer from my store a while back. He broke the SDMB rule #1 and was a jerk. An extreme jerk. As in yelling and abusing my employees.
As far as his being able to return, if someone were to try and write a repair order on his car a message comes up that he is not welcome at our facility and to have him escorted off the premises, by the police if necessary.
You don’t yell at my people.

In all fairness, I hold the liquor license for local restaurant, and getting caught serving a possible underage drinker without an ID can mean big fines, loss of your serving license, and for a bartender loss of their job. If a bartender lets stuff like this slide, like taking other people’s word about your age without an ID, he may soon be unemployed, and unemployable in the county or state. It’s serious business.

What happens if he sells the car?

I’m an EMT in the Security department at a Vegas casino. Whenever there aren’t any medical issues going on for me to deal with, I work with the Security guys enforcing the trespass warnings they give out pretty much willy-nilly. Seriously, there’s an average of probably 8 trespass warnings a day issued to people between the two properties I work for, and they enforce the bans forever. Surveillance sometimes recognizes someone with their software that was trespassed EIGHT YEARS AGO, and Security will approach the person and enforce the ban. An average of probably 5 people a week refuse to acknowledge the ban, and will not leave willingly. In those cases, Security has no problem handcuffing them and calling the police. The police will issue a citation in literally every case, and will take someone to jail for trespassing probably one time in twenty. This happens if the offender has been given a trespass warning multiple times recently and the cop doesn’t think another ticket will be enough to dissuade them from trespassing again. Not counted in any of these situations are the people Security catches for trespassing, which turn out to have criminal wants and warrants. If Security handcuffs anyone (whether for trespassing, cheating at gambling, assault, or some other crime) they take them to a holding room just like the movies. They strap you to a bench and link your handcuffs to a shackle bolt on the floor. How long you sit there is exactly how long it takes the police to arrive, which is typically 15-20 minutes for a non-emergency call, all the way up to 3 hours in the MOST extreme cases. If Security has a good name and/or identification from the subject (I almost said “guy”, but probably 50% or more of them are female prostitutes) the police will run a wants and warrants check over the phone, and tell Security exactly what they intend to do. If the records department says “we’ll be right there” for a simple trespass call, it means the guy/gal has warrants and will be arrested.

Anyway, that’s the basics of real-deal permanent bans from private property. I’m not aware of any type of business which has a more thorough policy for dealing with permanent bans. There is a paperwork trail and photograph for literally 100% of the permanent bans performed by Las Vegas casino security, and it’s deeply entwined with and depends on cooperation with the police.

Trust me, no one that has experienced this ahole will ever forget him. He was so bad, we were told by the car maker that we do not even have to do any warranty work on his car. He is not welcome.
He is on our own personal No Fly list.

I understand that, but why did he call the police and have me arrested when I merely asked for a refund for the drink that I paid for but could not drink?

My curiousity is more of the is your system based on car or name or some combination. I’d hate for some poor fella to buy a used car and have every single autoshop refuse him service.

Are you a fellow HSU alumni?? Did I know this already?

Around 12 years ago, I was kicked out of a bar in Walla Walla, WA.

I had gone in to bet a BBQ beef sandwich to ago. When I got my sandwich, I noticed they had unexpectedly put mayonnaise on it. Since I’m allergic to mayonnaise, the sandwich was rendered inedible so I asked the waitress if I could get one without mayo. Next thing I now, the owner storms out of the back, stuffs my money back in my hand, and tells me that’s how he makes his sandwich and to take it or leave it. Since I obviously can’t eat the sandwich, I take my money and leave the bar but not before I overhear the owner refer to me as “a piece of shit.”

I don’t know if I was officially “banned” from the bar but I never went back to find out. (Also, what kind of barbarian puts mayonnaise on a BBQ beef sandwich? When ordering sandwiches, I almost always tell them to hold the mayo but since the combination of mayo and BBQ sauce seemed so obviously unappetizing, I figured it was unnecessary.)

In his view you had requested a consumable he had to account for and were unprepared to deliver the legal verification requred to certify that you could drink it. He had delivered his end of the transaction, and you had screwed yours up by not having the required ID. Should the bar be punished financially for your mistake?
