Me and a couple of friends of mine went to Barrymore’s tonight. On sundays it is 80s night and the place was packed, with a huge line of people outside waiting to get in.
Anyway, we dance and have a good time, but as usual after one and a half hours of dancing, I’m sweating and am completely dehydrated. So I go to the bar and order a Rye and coke. The bartender looks at me and says she’s not serving me. I assume she’s making a joke, so I smile and say “oh and why is that?”. She calls security, tells me that I am too drunk and kicks me out. I tried to reason with the security guy, but he gave me that “Oh dude, it’s not my call. Sorry 'bout that, come back some other time” shtick. At least I could convince him that I have to say bye to my friends at least. They try to reason with the guy as well, but again to no avail.
That’s pretty retarded: While I was slightly drunk (i.e. in a good mood), I’m far, far from being smashed. In fact, I haven’t been this clear after going out in a long time. I guess the moral of the story is to order drinks that’ll last for the rest of the night, if you’re at Barrymore’s and it’s past 10:30 pm. Damn, that sucks.
Um… this was not an issue twenty years ago… and certainly not 50 years ago… when it was your OWN responsibility to drink responsibly (or not…) Not the frickin bartenders.
Or are you just reading-comprehension-impaired?
No. I’m just wondering why you choose to apply the term “PC.” Dude got pitched out of a bar because the bartender thought he was too hammered. Happens all the time. Even 20 years ago. He bitched about it. This too happens all the time. I’ll wager it even happened 20 years ago. Hell, the last time I got tossed out of a bar was 10 years ago, and I sure as hell bitched about it.
That’s why i call it a PC mess, because now, a bartender has to be responsible for keeping tabs on however many people happen to be in his/her bar all at the same time and make sure NONE of them are inebriated…or that bartender could lose his/her job, and the bar could get sued. Instead of the drinker being responsible FOR HIS OWN ACTIONS. The courts are JUST as culpable in causing this fear of offence or harm.
Same thing happened to a friend of mine on my birthday. He was getting up to use the bathroom, and a bouncer comes over and tells him he has to leave. He didn’t know why, and the bouncer told him “The owner thinks you look drunk.”
He was very confused, and was definitely not drunk. And not the sort of person who even looks drunk when he is wasted. But, wasn’t his call…he had to leave.
You will notice that large tips will usually overcome their duty to not serve you if you’re drunk. But if you are a stranger and you annoy anyone in the bar who is a regular, you’re finished. Friends of the bartender can fall off their barstool and climb back up for another shot. But typically, the bartender knows that person isn’t going to try to drive home.
I’ve been refused service a few times (and rightly so). The lawsuits that are brought against bar owners can ruin them. Also, who wants to be responsible for someone dying because they’re too fucked up to drive, walk, make decisions? I say good for him. You can go back another day.
Yeah, I guess this had several good points about it:
It was around 11:30 pm and since I had to go to work today, it was a good time to go home anyway.
They saved me 5 - 10 $.
It makes for a better story than saying “We went to Barrymore’s, stayed till 1:30 and had a great time.”
But it still irks me, as I wasn’t drunk. If they had kicked me out for having a crocked nose and wearing an ugly shirt, I could have understood, but that was just ridiculous.
Apparently it’s kinda “common” over here. I’m originally from Germany and I haven’t been kicked out - or have seen many people being kicked out - over there. So this is an entirely new experience for me.
I’ve been kicked out of a bar on false drunkeness charges. It does make you mad until you realize that the best revenge is you’re not giving that bar/club any more money.
