I actively loathe Amy Acker in whatever role she plays. It doesn’t seem to matter, from POI to Dollhouse to the one episode of Supernatural she was in waay back when it first started. I am sure the actress may be a nice person and everything, but I can’t stand her. I have no idea why I have such a visceral reaction to her.
For me, it’s a dual thing of her almost uncanny valley facial expressions and that ‘thing’ she does with her voice (I can’t even adequately describe it to myself). I’m sure it’s probably meant to be that way, trying to subliminally put us all off or something concerning her character, but to me, it’s simply an annoyance.
I like Shaw. She’s apparently so badass that she can mainline a hoseful of air directly into her veins. Her Axis-2 personality disorder allows her to ignore those pesky side effects of a massive air embolism. You know… symptoms like convulsions, paralysis, vomiting and death. We know she’s dealt with that last one before (she got better).
Wow. So what I’m feeling now is how religious people must feel when they hear heresy. Interesting.
Yes, agreed. I was even unable to watch Wedon’s Much Ado because Amy Acker ruined it for me. She was so horrible that I had to leave it before Nathan Fillion appeared.
I like Shaw a lot, the show needed some new faces and new plotlines. I might be biased though, I liked her detective character on “Life”, it was much the same gruff personality but not nearly as badass.
She almost does a baby talk voice, and also rather condescending. I like her though.
This is one of those times when I regret the lack of a Laugh feedback button on this site. (I’m a fan of Acker’s work, too.)
OMG, you just gave away the Season 4 plot arc!!!
Just saw Thursday’s episode, the show keeps getting better. Some big stuff that I thought would take all season just got revealed and now the situation has changed. But it really seems like Shaw is taking over, I’m starting to think they are setting it up so John leaves the show.
I really hope not - I think his character is integral to the show (and Jim Caviezel has great chemistry with Finch and everyone else, and is very easy on the eyes
).
Oh, I hope not. I won’t watch it without him, and his chemistry with Finch and Carter.
This week’s ep definitely seems to support my theory…
I like how last weeks episode ended. Harold is right: The Machine wants Root to be right where she is: locked up where she can’t hurt anybody, until The Machine decides it needs her again. I still hope they kill her off soon, however.
I love what’s happening with Carter and the rookie. But something has been nagging at me: Carter moved the body of that HR cop that Fusco buried, to save Fussco. I keep wondering if HR is eventually going to set Carter up to take the fall over this. ("Officer Carter, I’m from Internal Affairs. I’d like to check the trunk of your car for trace evidence…)
I have all but given up on Person of Interest.
I find story arcs annoying. I like the idea of the machine giving out only the number and the team intervening but not knowing if the number was victim or perp. That’s why I watched the show in first place. The attempts to make it more dramatic fall flat with me.
Yes, I had similar issues with Castle (who killed Beckett’s mom), The Mentalist (a serial killer with high placed law enforments officials ready to do his bidding), The X Files (with the godddamned cigarette-smoking man), Burn Notice (you’re OUT, get over it. You can now help others and make a real difference).
I found the number of the week episodes to be repetitive and boring. I like what they have going now, more like a movie and less like a TV show.
Yeah your theory is better than mine, I thought Shaw was going to replace John.
I thought of that while watching this week, too. I could see them splitting the show into two different parts at this point - they have two different teams, basically. I think they might be bringing Kirk Acevedo on to the show if they do that - he seemed to be the kind of character that we’ll see again.
The more common reaction to an all single-ep stories approach is like below.
I’ve seen people grouse over MOTW (monster of the week) eps forever. Heck, we’re barely into Sleepy Hollow and I’ve seen a couple of comments. I think for a show to work you do need both - single ep adventures with a background arc. What makes or breaks a show is the quality of both.
POI is running two story arcs that , imo, aren’t particularly interesting, one of which has nothing to do with the machine (HR). Skynet’s story arc is eh. I like Root and Shaw and would be interested in them developing as a team, but I’m not particularly intrigued by the machine’s agenda or watching Harold continue to deny it’s an AI (you knew that when it started matchmaking, Harold).
Speaking of the machine and personal relationships, I agree that Root was supposed to be captured, but Harold has to know Skynet’s not expecting him to run a prison. She and Shaw both need mentoring, and crazy as she is Root, respects Harold. That’s really the arc I’d like to see - Root and Shaw brought back to sanity as they work with Harold and John, if they can avoid doing the “poor widdle lost girl crying in the shower” bit that writers feel are obligatory.
Harold (and John) mentoring Root and Shaw? Very interesting!
ETA: I just realized you could argue that Carter is mentoring Russian Rookie, too.
