Persona 5

Is anyone else playing this?

I’ve been playing computer games since the mid 80’s on Z80 and 6502 machines. In all that time I think this may be one of, if not the, best game I’ve ever played.

The story, style, graphics, gameplay and soundtrack are all just perfect. I can’t remember the last game I enjoyed so much.

I wish, but I am not going to buy a PS4 for one game. The PS4 library seems pretty stacked lately though so maybe I should rethink that.

I heard the dungeons are way better, which was my main complaint about Person 4. So many boring hallways.

The dungeons are great  No boring corridors! Plenty of surprises.

I second this, 100%. This game just oozes with style. I’ve been waiting to play this game for a while now, ever since they announced it, since I’m a huge fan of the Persona series. And it does not disappoint one bit.

I like the little touches, like the transitions animations, the post battle sequences, bringing back the negotiation. Trying to find my connection in the subway station felt real! And yes, the dungeons feels so much better in this than in the previous games.

It’s also on the PS3 if you have one of those.

Persona 3 was amazing.

Persona 4 is, in my opinion, the best JRPG of all time.

I don’t have a PS3 or PS4, though. This needs a PC release!

So far, signs point to it being at least as good as these two.

Don’t hold your breath, PC Master Race, Atlus hasn’t released much of anything in this space.

To their detriment. Japanese games are finding a decent foothold on PC, now that they’ve started to make the jump.

They’re in bed with Sony though, so yeah, I don’t see it happening… except…

EMULATION!

It’s actually making good progress. It looks like we’ll have a playable version end of this year/early next.

This statement was much weirder when I thought the period was a comma.

It’s unclear if it’s actually to their detriment though; They’re not a big company. And their market is still primarily Japan. There are ways that it could absolutely be to their detriment to attempt the move poorly.

It’s actually a little bit surprising though, because I believe they are actually owned by SEGA, who certainly haven’t been shy about the PC space.

Huh. That’s odd. Most PCs can only make it to decent framerates when emulating the PS2, though I guess the PS4 could be easier thanks to more similar architecture.

I don’t really have a lot to say about this other than that it’s completely awesome and everything a fan of P3 or P4 could hope it would have been. If you’re on the edge, it’s a system seller, at least for someone like me. The way people who really love the Witcher or Zelda feel about those games? That is how I feel about this game: it’s a shoe-in for my game of the year even though it’s only April, and I’ll probably replay it at least once even though it’s looking like I’ll be in the 90 hour range for my first playthrough. Playing through a story that has a distinct direction is a breath of fresh air after the unending march of (in many cases excellent) third person open-world RPGs that have become so prevalent.

Oh it is absolutely to their detriment. They are missing out on what could potentially be a big component to their financial success, as current ports have shown. True, they need to make some changes in their development culture, but I think these would be good changes to make, changes they should have made a long time ago.

Take a look at Dark souls as a prime example. Started out as a petition. The port got made, and it was a DIRECT port form the console version - obviously PC gamers weren’t happy about that. But the community pitched in, fixes were made, the second game was a day and date port of much higher quality too. And now the PC version is fully responsible for over half of their sales!

The story isn’t going to be (and isn’t) the same for every japanese game, but you’re not losing much by trying, and they have much to gain. I don’t think something like PErsona would have a hard time being a 1+ million seller on PC.

It’s actually a PS3 emulator. Both the PS3 and WiiU emulators currently being worked on are making huge progress, thanks, in part, to new 3D API’s and some talented programmers.

PS3 has a number of titles that are fully playable now as doe the WiiU emulator. Sometimes with graphics upgrades too, like 4K support.

BUMP

Five years later, I am playing this on Switch. Just glad to have a chance to play this.

It’s a masterpiece. I ended up getting a PS5 during COVID and Persona 5 Royal was one of the first games I played. The new version with 60+ fps is even better since now you can see and enjoy the animations in addition to the fantastic 2D art.

Royal is available on the xbox game pass, so I’m playing it.

How long does it take to get going? I’m about 90 minutes in and there’s been maybe 10 minutes of actual gameplay so far. I know JRPGs can be slow to start but my patience is pretty limited these days.

Haven’t played it but I thought I’d note that this just came to gamepass, so you can give it a try there.

This game is 100 hours long.

Heh, I have it on Switch and it is a solid 30 FPS the whole time. Looks fine to me, though, since I’m not a graphics nut.

It will. This game is kind of famous for holding your hand a little longer than most games. It opens up by April 20 in game, I believe.

100 hours to finish the main plot, 100 hours to complete every side quest and visit every location, or 100 hours for every achievement?

Question:

I’m working on the opening section of the game, which involves an abusive teacher/coach. Clearly, it is sexual in addition to physical.

Are all the palaces and situations that we go out to solve sexual and physical? I remember Persona 4 or 3 had a strip-club themed dungeon, but the rest of the game was other issues.

Are the other “issues” non-sexual and non-abuse related? I don’t mind and actually think it’s a very gripping opening situation to be dealing with, but I would prefer to have a game my kids can watch me play when I clear the dungeons, etc. I’m no prude, but some of the issues are bit intense for my young kids. The game isn’t directly saying it at this point, but it is clear the coach sexually abused students in addition to physically hitting them.

I don’t want spoilers, but am hoping the other psyche/mental/issues we help eliminate or deal with are non-sexual and not all about abuse.
