Pet pictures!

Retained deciduous canines are common in toy breed dogs. I’ve seen breeders use a dime wedged between the permanent and deciduous tooth in an attempt to loosen the deciduous tooth

Not gonna stick a dime in there  . I expect it to get worked out eventually; he does like chewing on sticks and things. Plus it looks like the teeth are pretty close together already, so as one comes in further it should loosen the other. I’ll take him to the vet if it persists more than a month or so, though.

The brotherhood grows. It’s gone from Mort hiding in the basement for a year and a half, to them sharing a floor of the house, to them sharing the couch. But this is the first time I’ve looked down and seen them tolerating each other while touching and snoozing. Usually Bob gets too curious and Mort gets too irritated.

Ohhhh I am glad to see that! Mort finally that comfortable with Bob.

3 months later…

I’m back.
Sadly, I lost Mayme (posted above) on January 9th. To say I was devastated is an understatement. She helped me through my daughter moving out, through recuperating after transplant, through the pandemic. I have never felt the loss of a pet so deeply.

I debated about adopting again. I wasn’t sure I was in a good place to take on the responsibility, needed to care for myself. That lasted about three weeks when I realized I had gone multiple days where the only words spoken in my house were made in a daily call to my mom and calls with clients. My sleep had gone from poor to almost nonexistent. Mims and I had a great daily routine, needed for both of us, and it disappeared.

So, on February 5th, I brought home:

Mabel and Phineas. Four month old absolute nutball kittens.
She’s a bit standoffish, everything is an appropriate chew toy (including me), loves one particular mouse toy, dragging it around the house constantly. When she curls up next to me, it a lovely thing.
Phineas is beyond affectionate. He has no problems flooping on me, purring his heart out. Sleep has been difficult still, because he thinks 2am is an appropriate time to curl up in my neck, purring loudly. Unfortunately, I’m waiting to hear back from the vet to see if he “only” has a UTI or if it’s something more serious.

The instance that sealed the correctness of my decision to bring them home - as Mayme passed, for the first time ever she allowed me to cuddle her, and she reached out and patted my face. A few hours after bringing these two home, Phineas flooped in my arm, reached up and patted my face. Why yes, I did lose it.

Now my days are filled with “Get down!”, “Quit beating up your sibling”, “We don’t chew on the food bringer!” and lots of “You are the sweetest critters!”

Brewery visit last night. Kizzy was very good.

I’m a bit exhausted with raising a puppy and think my wife could have held off for a while longer, but our Rupert Giles is pretty adorable.

Awwww , cuteness overload. I love dogs in all forms but we always had Labs growing up, and had labs ourselves and the siblings have labs.
Rupert is well on the way to being a very good dog. After all the chewed furniture legs, tv remotes , shoes, missing socks , over turned trash cans, opportunist food swiping and rumaged dirty laundry baskets.

I think most of the country is in a deep freeze but it was 50 degrees here today. The dog park was a muddy mess. I joked with a few other owners that it must be bath day in the local dog community. There was this little peke that was running around with Bob that I wish I had got a picture of - he looked like a dirty little mop. Bob found another friend to run around with, though …

Do you ever gaslight your pets? I have done so, sometimes unintentionally like when I picked Pluto up at the kennel after a week’s stay. He didn’t recognize me in my mask and backed up against a kennel staffer for protection.

Mrs. J. once mystified him during puppyhood:

Got a couple of cat photos I especially liked yesterday.

Those guys look like they want to talk to you about something!

Love the first one

"Sir, we have some concerns about your recent performance… "

Demon-eye kitties!

Sad news. Mort is gone. He had a bad week and a consult with the doctor convinced me it was the right thing to do. That is to say, I cried my eyes out all day and I feel completely guilty, but the doctor assured me he was much sicker than he appeared on the surface. He slept on my chest purring happily away last night and I just couldn’t see myself going through with it.

I feel pretty zen about it now. The worst was just hanging out with him today knowing it was the last time. The doctor and the entire staff at the vet’s office made me feel so much better knowing it was time.

The best fucking cat in the world.

:candle:

I’ll be thinking of you both.

I’m sorry to hear that. You did right by Mort. Cats hide their pain more than most animals, but they still feel it. Reducing that suffering was the best you could have done even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Oh no! I’m so sorry. Obviously, you did the right thing.
And yeah…looks like a pretty fucking good cat.
