PETA ad and pubic hair? Weird

I dunno. The first probably has chiggers in it and the second one stale cheetos dust.

You got it. Their whole point is to do things so off-the-wall, offensive, and controversial that people can’t help but want to talk about it.

I am a vegetarian and I do fully support reasonable efforts to promote greater respect and humane treatment of animals (for example, the efforts to recognize Great Apes as having the right to legal personhood) but I would never give money to PETA. They do harm to the image of those who advocate for animals. It’s far more useful to donate money to an animal rescue than to these people.

It’s kind of bizarre to me that so many celebrities are on board with what they do. Celebrities really are quite stupid, aren’t they?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables (PETV) declined to comment!

Gee Your Pubes Smell Terrific

Not to put too fine a point on this, but aren’t human beings animals as well. My ancestors were HUNTER gatherers and eventually developed farming as a means of become less nomadic. Because we did not need to follow the herds in order to eat to survive - food was considered a necessity rather than a political lynchpin back then - the human race was able to stay in one place and use the free time and protein needed to grow these large brains in order to think, create language, engineering, religion, philosophy, art, music, political systems, etc. At this writing there are 7,053,041,099 people on earth. Source: http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html Many of them still subsistence farmers to whom meat is a staple of their diet. According to Darwinian natural selection and survival of the fittest I have earned the right to eat and wear animals. I hear folks complaining about the deplorable conditions of factory farms and food (protein) harvesting techniques and agree it is not something we should be proud of. Although it is what is necessary to feed this planet in the manner in which, at least the 1st world populations have become accustomed too. The Romans could have told you, once the population gets some luxury it’s nearly impossible to take it away from them. In fact, they see it as a “right” of citizens.

If you have a choice, feel free to become a vegetarian. If you have freedom of religion in your area become a Christian. If you want to be entertained by animals (including the human being) go for it. If you are able to express your views without persecution, then do so. Just don’t get in my face about these things. I make my own choices because by sheer luck of birth I live in a country where I can do that. I know, ignore the ads you say. But what fun would that be?

Having starved in various locations around this planet, it still never ceases to amaze me at the arrogance and ignorance afforded people in 1st world countries that take up causes that don’t even cross the minds of the majority of the world’s population. PETA should focus on the problems caused by overpopulation. Because as far as I can see, the real problem is not the humans causing trouble for the animals, but humans casing trouble for the humans.

Too heavy?

She left off, “Except pigs. I need them for my insulin.”

I totally left PETA behind when they came out against the use of guide & therapy dogs. When you consider the Vachss Therapy Dog program has helped put child molesters in prison…

I recently made the same argument in another thread (LA advocating “meatless Mondays”); of course, the way we raise animals is as big of a problem, as I also mention (i.e. animals should should eat grass and other wild plants, turning something that humans can’t eat into food, never mind that agriculture in general, as commonly practiced today, uses vast amounts of energy and fertilizer; of course, we wouldn’t be able to produce enough food otherwise, which goes back to overpopulation).

Wasn’t it the PETA number two, who has since left, that was a diabetic?

Class act, that PETA.

Possibly. My bad.
Wait a minute, aren’t they Vegan?

One of your senior officers fell off the meat wagon, huh?

Maybe that’s a good thing.

They are actually right about this, maybe not the sole reason but a contributor, but it won’t stop me from eating meat; note the types of meat they mentioned, and then the following (which is also talking about red meat, the kind that is supposed to be especially bad for you):

So the culprit is as usual, processed food - which also happens to be mostly “vegan” foods (such as Twinkies, while not entirely vegan, they are mostly nasty refined grains, hydrogenated oil (the ingredients say “may contain”, but more likely than not they use them over natural animal fats because they are cheaper) and sugar).

It is also interesting to note where the additional calories Americans are consuming in recent decades come from - grains and added fats, with a more modest increase in sugars, while meat consumption has remained relatively flat (of course, what is the relative percentage of unprocessed vs processed meat, this chart shows that people are eating less red meat, so much for the health benefit of doing so. I doubt this alone is responsible for the increase in diabetes though, and processed meat used to be much worse).

I guess Joanna is going to have to hover from now on…
