**. . . and I don’t wish cancer, especially prostate cancer, on anyone . . .
. . . but . . . **
BUT???
BUT what???
are we talking about the same fucking Rudolph Giuliani who, when his useless-as-tits-on-a-bull police force …
You dont sound sympathetic.
The fact is that when many men are confronted by the spectre of prostate cancer, they are as scared as little girls. Most women will go yearly for a demeaning pap smear, from their teens till they die - do most men go for a yearly prostate exam? Not bloody likely!
Men are afraid of the rubber glove, the lube, the bend over… (is this making you uncomfortable guys? You know it is) and to see a man on a BILLBOARD for petes sake - proclaiming his very private man-disease… it is unspeakable.
If it was a woman, would the same sign be appropriate with breast cancer? Cervical cancer? I think NOT.
Do I give a rats ass about his polital history - no.
But unless you can prove he molests children, burns crosses, or bashes fags - then I will damn well protest the way he has been treated!!!
Protecting animals is a worthy cause, and these peta people are setting it back by leaps and bounds.
As Batman told Poison Ivy: People have to come first.
absoul pets his fox fur shawl and adjusts his seal skin undies
I don’t condone dragging kitties behind cars or the hateful way that animals are killed in slaughterhaouses, but steak is good and fur coats are warm.
Organizations like PETA, and yes even GREENPEACE, love the the attention given to them by this circumstance. Even if they were the ones to f$%k up, it brings them press.
I know little about Guiliani, and most is pretty negative. But fair is fair; he’s a public figure, accountable for his record in office, but hijacking him was a cheap shot.
It was based on junk science, and was disgracefully mean spirited. Fair is fair; using disease as a political weapon is despicable. Doesn’t matter the debatable “worth” of the sufferer. Prostate cancer, AIDS, diabetes–using disease as a media tool is despicable, no matter the agenda. Sickness deserves more decency than facile media hoopla.
I wish PETA would stop disgracing the ethic and goal they claim to support. It infuriates me that they’re trivializing their viable message by glomming onto the worst, hostile, high-media/low-meaning stunts.
It’s hard to escape the analogy of practicing Christians faced with bigoted uber-fundamentalist hatemongers.
PETA, I grieve to say, is about ego and hate, not the ethic they claim to believe.
The “sig” was included in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. I live a nearly vegetarian lifestyle – not by choice, but since I’ve a wife that IS vegetarian, I eat according to her rules at the house, and indulge in meat when I eat out. My wife has numerous vegetarian friends. NONE of them are offended by these kinds of statements when said in jest.
Besides, if I recall the facts correctly, “People Eating Tasty Animals” is the legal description of the PETA trademark. The clowns at “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” are so oblivous to life that they didn’t bother to trademark “PETA”. So some clever individual grabbed the trademark and applied it to the line that I used as the pseudo-sig.
Wow, SouthernStyle, that was incredible–you managed to describe exactly the situation that exists on Bizzaro Earth!
See, the Sraight Dope is that some bozo who thinks he exists outside of intellectual property laws, by the name of Michael Doughney, registered the peta.org domain name (in the process fraudulently misrepresenting himself as a non-profit organization, for which “.org” domains are reserved). PETA sued him for infringement of their registered trademark, and they won.
The judge in the case found that “”…Doughney had the requisite bad faith intent" to profit from use of PETA’s trademark. He “clearly intended to confuse, mislead, and divert Internet users into accessing his Web site, which contained information antithetical and therefore harmful to the goodwill represented by the PETA mark.” The judge also noted that Doughney “…has registered other Internet domain names, which are identical or similar to either marks or names of famous people or organizations he opposes,” and “[he] made reference to seeing what PETA would offer him if PETA did not like his Web site.” In case you’ve been on Mars lately, profiteering through the process of infringing on other people’s trademarks is illegal. Doughney was ordered to relinquish the domain and to transfer his registration to PETA. kellibelli:
Hey, I said that I hope he gets it treated successfully, and I do. I’m sure that as mayor of New York, he has much better health coverage than many people other who are suffering from cancer. People who he probably supports denying health benefits to. Ironic, no?
What does that have to do with anything? If men don’t seek prostate exams, it’s their own bloody fault, AFAIC. Hell, I don’t think my wife has had a gynecological exam in 5 years, and I urge her to go all the time.
I don’t think so either. I said I thought the sign was out of line. You know, like the first line in my first post? I’m not defending PETA’s actions here, just pointing out that Giuliani better be prepared to get as good as he gives, and what he gives is usually pretty evil.
I was about to say that that’s exactly what’s wrong with this country, then I remembered that you are Canadian.
His police force allows unarmed minorities to be executed by the police with frightening frequency, and allows women to be sexually assaulted by crowds in Central Park, and he sits back and does nothing. In fact, he nearly immediately leaps forth to blame the victims. Is that bad enough?
No offense was made by the original use of the phrase “People Eating Tasty Animals” or by the explanation. If you’ll read my original response again, you’ll find that the post was teasing Zette. Regarding the subsequent post, obviously I’d heard the story incorrectly.
You seem a bit agitated. Of course this IS the Pit where such emotions are expected, but to present good information with an in-your-face style was not appreciated and perhaps not appropriate.
I just have seen enough of these threads to know that they will shortly descend to general “vegetarians are morons” crap, and I’m a little tired of it. Not that you have done that–you have not and I don’t want to insinuate that you have.
(I also didn’t mean to denigrate Bizzaro Earth–I like Bizarro Earth! Me can be contestant on, “Who Doesn’t Want To Be A Millionaire?”!)
“Probably supports denying health benefits to”? I don’t recall him having such a stated policy, or taking action through legislation towards that end. He has enough questionable ethics that you can criticize without hinting at ones that I don’t think exist in real life. Since you brought up the term with SouthernStyle (rightfully so), I ask you if this is not another Bizzaro Earth situation?
And isn’t that a DC Comics reference? I’ve seen you making Marvel comics references also in the past. Man, you and your funny books. I’m not poking at you, as I myself have a large Marvel collection.
Yes, this is truly deeply disturbing to me, especially the attacks on minorities. Characterizing the Central Park Atrocities as being the fault of him “sitting back and doing nothing” is facetious though. However, and I know it is forbidden for liberals to criticize unions in any way, isn’t a large part of the problem in NY the police force itself, and the NY FOP’s desire to become a private autonomous army that is what is really behind a lot of their gross incompetence and criminal actions? Aren’t they the ones that campaign night and day to disarm the law-abiding citizens of NYC, only so once the people are completely helpless the cops can then go on “sick outs” to extort their latest pay raise?
The mayor does indeed set the “tone” of enforcement, so to speak, and does directly control who leads the force. But IMO these actions trickle down to the rank and file a lot less so than people would like to think. For that same reason, even though I view Clinton as treasonous criminal mastermind, I don’t blame him directly for the acts of the BAFT under his reign of terror.
I donated $500 to a local non-profit no-kill animal shelter last December. AND, I didn’t take the tax credit for it ('cause I forgot ).
You know Phil, I’ve read several of your posts on this subject in general over the last few weeks. It seems like you come closer and closer to my position on PETA’s PR campaign every day, and you make many good points on this issue. Which I think shows that you are reasonable person who can step back and look at things objectively. Bravo!
And phil, you are right - there is far too much “vegetarians are morons” shit going around. I would be very irritated as well. These issues have little, if anything, to do with the healthy lifestyle of vegetarianism.
An admitted stab in the dark. I mean, it is Giuliani, and he is evil. Still, I can’t imagine he supports, for example, increasing Medicare/Medicaid benefits, which could help many people who are in the most at-risk categories for cancer.
Either way, it’s less to the point than my real point, which was that although I do think this billboard was a stupid idea (both because it is patently offensive and sure to cause anger, and because it is based on junk science), and I don’t want to see the man suffer or die from a treatable condition, Rudy Guiliani is the last man on Earth (real, not Bizarro) who should be complaining about hurt feelings.
[hijack]I am first cousin to two men who have made terrific careers in the comics industry. The first, Paul Kupperberg, began as a comics writer at DC (He did mostly various Superman titles, including the “World of Krypton” series"), and is now an editor. He also does some writing for their young adult division. His brother, Alan, is a former Marvel artist, who did a lot of work on Spider-Man and The Avengers in the 70s and 80s. He now does a lot of work for independent companies like Image, Dark Horse and others.

Well, I’m no veggie basher- personally I don’t care if you eat a shit sandwich every day for lunch.
I am asking that this thread be closed, since the original rant has obviously become misconstrued. The OP rant was about PETAs publicity tactics, not the evil that may or may not be Gulliani, or what Phil likes to eat. Since the topic was already covered in GD and has been beaten into the ground, I’m requesting that it be closed.
“people eating tasty animals”.
Well, sure, after someone has killed the cow for you, sliced it up for the good parts, put it in the freezer.
And you have to cook it or it isn’t very tasty.
Do you go to the sluahgter houses and look at the bloody corpses and get hungry? Hope not.
I dont think vegetarians are morons. My 5 yr old doesnt like meat - I dont push it on him. My 9 yr old doesnt like milk - again, his choice.
What have I done lately Phil?
Not much. I adopted a cat, I treat him well, feed him the best the vet has. He cost me almost 300 bucks in vet bills a few months ago, but he got the treatment he needed, and thats all that matters. I try to be ethical in the way I treat my animal…but I still eat meat.
OH good lord almighty!
PETA must be eating too many poisonous toadstools…
As far as the Mayor, yes, he’s a public figure, but does that mean he doesn’t deserve privacy? Bash him on his political record, NOT on his personal problems!
