This seems a bit outlandish even for them.
Shall we argue abo, er, discuss it?
The fish try to ban people parking on PETAs.
They fail.
[blantantly inflamatory statement]
Didn’t Jesus endorse the eating of fish? What, Jesus isn’t good enough for PETA?
[/blantantly inflamatory statement]
But in all seriousness, I whole-heartedly support the organization for People Eating Tasty Animals…
A darn good point.
;j
Mmmm… fish in pita.
Not surprising that PETA isn’t in line with the rest of the nation on this issue.
It’s not a big a deal as it sounds though. According to the article about half of the states already don’t allow fishing in their state parks.
I’ve been in areas where I wasn’t even allowed to pick flowers. Doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.
Let’t let the states decide what is to be done in the state parks.
Have you not been paying any attention to PETA over the last decade? I don’t particularly agree with banning fishing in all state parks but this is hardly an outlandish proposition coming from PETA.
Marc
Isn’t PETA’s M.O. finding the most outlandish action they can think of, then doing it in the most public way possible? They’re like the Tom Green of activism. How is anyone shocked by them anymore?
I haven’t been shocked since they compared chickens to the Holocaust. I’m amused. What’s next, escargot? Worms and bees in the garder constitutes slavery? Horseback riding?
I plan to celebrate their statement by going fishing.
:: Shrug :: I don’t find it an outlandish proposition at all. Half the states already don’t allow it, and the ones that do deal with problems stemming from it, from over-fishing to pollution from boats to yards and yards of fishing line that ends up over the side and on the bottom. I don’t find “fish feel pain” to be a particularly compelling argument, but I have significantly more sympathy for the argument that “overfishing and irresponsible fishing cause significant ecological damage.” Buy it or not, that’s a reasonable argument.
Maybe people just think it’s dumb because it’s from PETA? Granted, they’ve had some bone-headed ideas over the years (Unhappy Meals, anyone?), but that doesn’t mean that every thing they say is definitionally stupid.
“For reasons that really defy logic, we allow people to spend their afternoon impaling them on hooks.”
Yeah, I guess it’s just their goofiness.
Anyway, like perspective alluded, let the parks decide.
Allthough, what is a lake in a state park for if you can’t fish it?
I don’t have a problem with banning fishing in certain areas, if the motive is to keep the population at reasonable levels, prevent the “unnatural” elimination of a species, or whatnot. In this sense, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a state wanting to ban fishing in its state parks. However, I do think that A.) this should be a state issue, not a federal issue, and B.) PETA’s rational here, as usual, is just plain batty. Woe be to he who should come between me and a tasty BBQed trout.
Jeff
tasty BBQed trout
How about we email all our favorite game fish recipes to PETA?
Not as much fun as taunting the Nigeria scam, but safer.
I personally think they have only one point that is really worthwhile for consideration - banning lead sinkers. I do not like the idea of so much metallic lead in streams and natural areas. When I was a child and forced to go with parents who loved fishing, I was easily able to collect large numbers of “junk” lead sinkers, lying about on the ground near fishing holes, or even still attached to cast-off lines wrapped around branches, etc.
I mean seriously - copper is quite a bit heavier than water too - and a lot less toxic.
Duck hunters switched to steel shot because lead is bad. I think it is silly to have a blanket banning of all fishing in every state park. Does the cite say that half of all state parks ban fishing or that half of all states ban fishing in their parks?
In Arkansas you can fish at most of the state parks. Some of them restrict the number and type of fish, boat motor size, and some ban fishing alltogether. Of course I think Arkansas makes a pretty penny getting tourist to come down here and fish.
Marc
Psst. Marc.
Is this Osborne lady Huckabee hired to run the Department of Information Services related to Jennings Osborne?
I think I’ve just been whooshed. Who is Jennings Osborne?
Marc
A very rich man who used to put on quite a light show.
oh yeah, from the OP link:
“Fishing is not permitted in state parks in about half of the states”
