This may, in fact, turn out to be a simple GQ. If so, please feel free to move it there.
I’m wondering why we’re going through all this trouble to find ways to bring Pete Rose back in baseball’s good graces so that he can get into the Hall of Fame.
In reality, that is the case. I’m fairly certain that even if he does get reinstated, he won’t find another (non-honorary) job in Organized Baseball. The whole issue between Rose and Selig is because fans want to see Rose in the Hall of Fame.
The interesting thing about this is that the Hall is independent of MLB. If Selig turns around and reinstates Rose, there is nothing that says that the Hall has to take Rose. The Hall could (theoretically) adopt a similar resolution stating that anyone who was ever on the ineligible list is not eligible. The Hall is the organization that made things messy by linking eligibility to the Hall to MLB’s ineligible list.
So, in theory, should not Rose be bothering the Hall and not MLB? Or is he picking on MLB because he thinks they’ll cave faster than the Hall? Why doesn’t Selig just turn to Rose and say “I’m not keeping you out of the Hall, the Board of Trustees of the Hall is keeping you out. You don’t like it? Complain to them!”
Good point Zev I would think most people don’t know the HoF is independent of MLB. I certainly didn’t until my ignorance on the matter was corrected here on the SDMB.
I guess Rose is taking it one step at a time. First get off the Ineligible List, then the HoF should automatically put him on the ballot. He has the stats to be elected, therefore, he voters would elect heim.
BTW Since when does Bud Selig ever do things that might make sense.
I think Rose might get the impression that many Baseball HoF voters have no desire whatsoever to see him in the Hall. He might also not know that re-instatement in any capacity need not mean anything to the voters (who could, if they so chose, remove his ineligibility marks, so to speak, and vote him in next year if they so chose) of the Hall and thus thinks that reinstatement means they’ll all vote for him.
I don’t your faith in this. I’m pretty sure that Rose wants a baseball job. And I’m pretty sure that some fool would hire him (probably as a manager) if he were reinstated. If only to reap the receipts of a ton of fans in the seats. And I’m pretty sure that it’d be a really bad idea. A repeat performance, in fact, of the darker days of The Game of the Rose.
If all he wants is admittance to the HoF then, yes, he should be pestering them. I just don’t believe that is all he wants.
I wouldn’t underestimate Selig’s role in this thing. If he thinks he can ride Rose to a higher place in the minds of fans, he will try to do so, IMO. The negative publicity of the past couple of years of his commissionership must weigh heavily upon his mind.
