There are a lot more dwarfs who aren’t actors, who are actuaries and waitresses and accountants and computer programmers and receptionists and janitors, and… who may have less trouble being taking seriously as human beings if all their coworkers and customers haven’t just seen a movie where a lot of the point was “ooh, dwarfs are funny”.

I know I had trouble being taking seriously after my co-workers watched a movie about funny ‘white’ guys. Comedies are awful that way.
Um, this is where the whole “privilege” thing is relevant. White guys have nothing to fear from comedies about white guys, i totally agree with that. They also don’t have anything to fear from villains who are stereotypical white guys. And you know, if there were hundreds of acting roles for dwarfs that weren’t about “haha, he’s a dwarf”, the rare role that made fun of dwarfs for being dwarfs wouldn’t be an issue, either. But you’ve already acknowledged that there AREN’T lots of normal roles for dwarfs.

Thank you for the very detailed and patient response to the age-old cry of “but what about the white men?”. You are a better person than I. All I can muster is an eye roll.

This is a fucking disgusting post. You are embarrassingly out of touch.

This is the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.
The original Snow White very much didn’t make fun of the dwarfs for being dwarfs did it? They were hard working, loyal and brave as well as funny. No reason why a live action remake with dwarf actors couldn’t be just as even-handed.

If the rumours are true you have to wonder why it is called Snow White at all.
$$$$$$$
If it wasn’t called that they couldn’t make half a billion dollars off it. They likely won’t anyway, but they made half a billion dollars of the Cinderella remake no one remembers; that’s the entire plan, is just remaking better movies to make half a billion dollars off the name recognition.

Trouble is, half a billion dollars is unlikely to make them a profit, not with the current esacalation in production budgets. Also, if it turns out to be dogshit then it may well erode any brand loyalty and limit their ability ot make money off future live action remakes that are OK. Disney aren’t doing great at the moment and could do with fewer missteps.

That took me a minute. Brilliant.

Disney aren’t doing great at the moment and could do with fewer missteps.
Quoting from a quick Google search:
"The Walt Disney Company reported a net income of around $1.41 billion in the third quarter of 2023. This is compared to a net income of $1.27 billion in the second quarter of 2023.
Disney’s gross profit for the twelve months ending June 30, 2023 was $28.776B, a 3.06% increase year-over-year. Disney’s annual gross profit for 2022 was $28.321B, a 27.07% increase from 2021."
They seem to be doing pretty well to me unless you have a different definition of “aren’t doing great at the moment”.
It’s the definition that fits a certain political narrative that is getting pushed.

It is important to be aware of what you are comparing against. There may be a year-on-year or Q-on-Q improvement but that doesn’t mean they are “going great”. They may even be heading gradually in the right direction but that doesn’t necessarily put them in a position where they can weather lots of bad publicity, bad decisions or bad products.
Compared to the decade prior to 2019 they are well down and Disney plus is losing a lot of money with no real end to that in sight.
Here’s a link to the history of their net income, you can have a look at the charts for yourself.

True.
How are other movie and TV studios doing right now?
I’m no fan of Disney nor do I hate them just for context.
The chart shows a Covid dip and then a steady profit. The worst I can say is that they are doing awesomely but less so than pre-plague. How does this compare to other elements of the same business segment?
My simple view of this is that Disney is in no danger of going away anytime soon.

Some are doing better than disney some are doing worse. It is a tough time for all.
Few are doing great, Disney included.

I’m completely neutral as well. I really like some of the stuff they’ve put out. More of that please. I do have a D-plus account.

Some “dip” and quite a low bar for “awesome”. I would say that they are way down on the profits of the pre-covid decade and have yet to show signs of sustained recovery.

How does this compare to other elements of the same business segment?
I don’t know and and isn’t relevant to the point I’m making about Disney’s much reduced profitability. They may the best of a bad bunch and that would still be cold comfort to the bean-counters.

My simple view of this is that Disney is in no danger of going away anytime soon.
I suspect that’s the case but to get back to where they were is a long haul that would be helped by avoiding too many easily avoidable mis-steps.
It’s a little early to judge whether this movie will be a flop or a blockbuster, or something in between.

I apologize sincerely. I intended to make a sarcastic post but ended up posting something awful. It’s the second time I did this in the past week or so, starting out something in a sarcastic vein and not making that at all clear or obvious. It was not a crazy TriPolar statement, it was just me being a jerk and not even realizing what I posted. Your responses were all appropriate for what I posted.

I admit to not having watched the Disney movie since i was a kid. But yes, i absolutely remember the dwarfs as being comic relief, and funny because they were dwarfs. Sneezy, Sleepy, Grumpy… They don’t even have “people” names, they have “comic-relief” names. They weren’t individuals, just a clump of “support for the main character” who bumble about. At least, that’s what the movie said to me.
