Is “dwarf rights” a particularly hot button issue? Have you seen evidence of anyone other than Peter Dinklage being angry about this? Have you seen any evidence of other dwarfs being angry about this?
Come on. If Disney were this sensitive to bad press, Gina Carano would still have a job, and Ariel would still be white.
Because The Daily Mail wanted to manufacture a bullshit culture war story, and then other sources reported on their headline. Not because of anything real.
Well, Carano kind of cuts against my point, but still, Disney isn’t going to order expensive reshoots because one guy* complains. Disney will respond to bad press, sure, but where’s the bad press in this situation? Most of the coverage has been more critical of Dinklage than Disney.
Yes, I really think that the decision to have faithfully recreated Dwarfs in their long series of faithfully recreated live action remakes was made long before any of the headlines.
I just saw an interview with Zach Roloff on TikTok. He was not happy with Dinklage. He said the dwarfism side of it was erased and that by doing so they went backwards. He thought it would be great to have dwarfs in the movie. He said there is power having 7 dwarfs in a major Disney movie. He said that if the story was offensive to dwarfs, change the story don’t change the characters.
This strikes me as peak recreational outrage. One actor made an off-the-cuff comment on a podcast some years back. A right-wing outrage machine picked it up and ginned it up into a “WOKE GONE AMOK!” story. A cash-grab movie that was probably going to be shitty anyway looks, from the previews, like it’s going to be shitty. And now Peter Dinklage is wholly to blame.
Yawn.
FTR: I’m with Dinklage on his original comments, as I said a couple of years ago. But I also think it’s insane to hold him responsible for anything beyond his own opinion. He didn’t write a dissertation, he didn’t lead a campaign against the movie, he didn’t tunnel under Disneyworld to collapse the Magic Kingdom. Whatever shitty decisions Disney made are wholly their own decisions–as are any brilliant decisions they made.
Possibly. Other than that one picture I haven’t read anything stating what their intent was from the beginning. Martin Klebba is reported to be Grumpy and he is a dwarf actor. Maybe he did motion capture. I haven’t seen casting about the others. Maybe it’s out there somewhere.
It’s been a long road. It was supposed to start filming in 2020 and was of course delayed by Covid. Then it was delayed by the strike. There was time for a lot of changes to occur.
I don’t see any reason that the CGI would mean it was always the plan. It has been quite a while, and the CGI does not appear to be of the highest quality. Obviously there was always CGI in it, but maybe not the Dwarfs.
Remember remaking Sonic, and how long that took? This has, I believe, been longer.
I do find the idea that they were wearing costumes that don’t even match the CGI characters to suggest they had a different plan. And the hyperreal style makes me think the backgrounds are likely CGI.
Again, I like the aesthetic, but it does not look realistic. It looks like a few humans in a CGI world.
It’s easier to act when you have someone to look at, rather than empty air.
And we don’t know if they are “random people”, they might be the actors “playing” the CGI Dwarfs? (Who may not be the same actors as the ones VOICING them, or even doing the facial acting, mind you).
Or, the more snarky response:
Can you believe how shitty the dragons on Game of Thrones looked? They were just ugly green blobs!
Are you sure they were filming when that picture was taken? Is it possible they were rehearsing, in which case there’s no need for motion capture equipment?
