Not going to say it’s his best, or his funniest, but The Ladykillers is worth a look for a number of good reasons, not the least of which is Peter Sellers playing the straight man to Alec Guiness’ comedic “Evil Professor.”
I’ll second Strangelove, but if you love Sellers do yourself a favor and check out a 1957 gem called “The Naked Truth,” also known as “Your Past is Showing.” This one really put Sellers on the map. It’s as funny as the Pink Panther movies!
I just remembered another one, something about Alice B. Tolkias??? I Love You, A.B.T maybe?
Sellers was hot for a hippie and gave up his straight-laced ways to woo her. Lots of drugs, free love, etc. I remember it being pretty entertaining too.
This is someone I know’s second favorite movie, she told me I’d like it, and she was right. Although it’s well worth watching, it’s definitely not his best, what with the others already mentioned here.
His character was named Harold Fine, which worked well in the Simon & Garfunkel title song – the lyrics go :
I love you, Alice B. Toklas!
and so does Harold Fine
I love you, Alice B. Toklas!
and so does Gertrude Stein …
(The title comes from Alice B. Toklas’ brownies, from Ms. Toklas’ infamous cookbook.)
Dr. Strangelove, Being There, and The Mouse That Roared are probably his best films over all. He and Victor Mature are both better than the whole movie in After The Fox. If the script had been stronger and not just petered out near the end it would probably be a classic instead of an interesting failure. Sellers also steals his only scene in The Wrong Box, but it’s only a cameo.
return of the pink panther. You get both his fine sense of comedy delivery and a lot of physical comedy. cant beat that. reminds me of the WC Fields movies. such timing, subtle but then right into some silliness.
the wierd thing is I dont like the “strikes again” one. it seems like a obvious ripoff of the “return”. maybe its just me.
always think about the return when I see “naked gun” movies.
strangelove, and mouse movies were good but too much non-sellers moments. the Return of the Pink Panther is 90% him.
The Party is the funniest movie ever made by anyone. And has the best, most unintentional double entendre I ever heard in my life: When Sellers sees the cat’s litter box, I say “Oh, no,” and my friend Karen says, in all seriousness, “He wouldn’t stoop so low.”
As I sat there crying from the heartbreak of the final scene…I started rewinding the tape…with tears falling down my cheeks I changed the channel to TCM and watched as Peter Sellers tried to do a handstand on the bed, while Shirley McLaine’s character took things into her own hands …for some reason hilarity ensued…I didn’t know what I was watching until I checked the description…it was two hours into Being There.
I will have to watch the whole movie now!! Is the whole thing as funny as the last 20 min?
