Phoenix Doper mini gathering minutes

I’ve just returned from an evening of excellent conversation with Athena and fellow Phoenix Doper Strainger along with my non-doper (I’m working on her) main squeeze Ann. We met for drinks at the Priness resort in Scottsdale where Athena is attending a conferencs.

Things learned at this meeting:

  1. Athena, Strainger and I have remarkably similar taste in movies.
  2. The three of us all have remarkably similar stories of long lost grandfathers. We hesitate to draw a correlation with point one though.
  3. The idea of vanilla flavored vodka makes my flesh crawl but it didn’t taste so bad. With soda it’s kind of like Dr. Brown’s cream soda with a shot of ever clear.

<bump>
Damn a thread can move down a long way in nine hours, particularly if you post after midnight.

Yes, we all do have strangely similiar grandfathers… perhaps some sort of sign? Are all us dopers somehow related, way back? Is there an ancient doper tribe that’s been wandering the world for eons?

And no, I haven’t thought of the name of that movie yet. I know one quick trip to IMDB would give me it, but I prefer to spend my oh-so-precious free time here, at the SDMB.

I have pics. Not quite sure where to post 'em, though. Is there a way to get 'em on the people pages?

Athena, if you can email them to me I can post them on my own home page. I’ll probably use mine to replace my people pages pic.

I had a great time last night, as I always do when meeting with fellow Dopers. It was looking like the event would have to be cancelled because Athena had a keynote from 7-10. However, the last 1.5 hours turned out to be just a desert buffet, so she blew that part off to hang out with Padeye and me. I was glad we were able to work that out. Athena is a lot of fun, very outgoing and friendly, and damn intelligent. Couple all that with her pleasant smile and beautiful blue eyes (even though they can be “psycho-eyes” at times ;)). And no I’m not hitting on her; she’s in a happy relationship, lives way up in Denver, and, well, we just may be cousins.

Other topics discussed:

  • Retroactive type-casting of Alec Guiness among ~30 year-olds
  • Getting busted for SDMB reading at work, a la Chronos

The Princess is a pretty upscale place, and you pay extra for that atmosphere. Between the four of us we ended up paying approximately $782.59 for a total of 10 drinks. We charged it all to Athena’s room while she wasn’t looking.

Not knowing how far the 101 has progressed, I followed the Mapquest directions and got off the freeway at Via de Ventura (I think) and took surface streets from there. After about 8 miles on surface streets, I arrived at the intersection of Frank LLoyd Wright and Hayden, less than a mile from the Princess Resort. I looked to my right and saw the freeway about 1/4 mile down the road. To Mapquests credit, I got on the 101 from FLW on the way back and drove several miles through road construction before reaching the multi-lane section.

(Ancient Doper tribe, now there’s a frightening thought.)

Hey, I think this is still legal in most states! You could go to Georgia where it’s legal to marry your first cousin (rumor has it).

Crap, I knew I left myself open on that one. Hey, I have cousins I haven’t even dated yet.

By the way, I got your postcard, BunnyGirl. Whoo-hoo! Thanks! Yours is finally on the way (Demo’s too, if he’s lurking), even though you’re a smartass.
