It wouldn’t surprise me. They’ve defended weirder. Then again, Phred’s family is made up of mostly lawyers, so I imagine they’d be doing this on their own. They might be violent and deranged, but stupid they are not.
Sooner or later Phred is going to picket the wrong funeral. Some jarhead, already grieving for his dead buddy and trained to kill, is going to kick the holy shit out of him, or the well armed son of a coal miner is going to go “temporary insanity” on him, and when that happens I don’t think they’ll have a minute’s problem in raising bail, legal fees, etc., and getting off free. I’m not saying I hope or wish this would happen (because that would be in violation of BBQ PIT rules), just that it could.
One of my nastiest fantasies of Phred is this: he likes to carry sexually graphic signs and cartoons of gay sex. He also absolutely worshipped his father even though he didn’t speak to him for the last 20 years of the man’s life (he divorced his wife and remarried, thus damning him to hell), and he also was close to his mother. I’d love to have people walk by him with really horribly graphic gay sexual poses in which the heads of the figures are cut out photos of Fred’s parents. (Really cool would be his mother’s face on the poster of a woman performing condolingus… cunnileeza… whatever it’s called on another woman with the face of Fred’s stepmother, whom he absolutely despised and called whore.)

#!For a Sunday morning the street our cathedral is on is fairly well traveled, with several churches spaced along it. They can go from one to another without much travel time. The WBC does also split up on Sundays, to cover more services of other churches. They don’t ususally do churches on obscure streets. #2 And we are Episcopalian. Members of another ECUSA church here in Topeka were amongst the first to stand up and be counted, counter picketing against him #3 Google Gene Robinson, and New Hampshire. #4 We aren’t WBC, and that’s enough for them. But they seem to especially hate churches with a formal liturgical style, like Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, and so on.
This could be an idea for a really splendid Dopefest you know.
I’m in Dallas, but damn, making a party of this sure sounds tempting …
One of my goals in life is to go to Topeka and go to church with Baker. I want so bad to hear Phred’s Phlock call her “church whore.”
Alright, I’ve read most of the Phelps pittings and I don’t get the “Just ignore them so nobody pays attention to them” mentality. Whenever older, more, I guess “traditional” (that doesn’t seem right, but whatever) hate groups decide to muster they’re normally outnumbered 1000 to 1 by counter protesters, which is a good thing, isn’t it? Sort of dilutes them to the normal number of a few crazies you might get in any crowd.
Sure, it may cause it to make the news on a slower news day, but as a family member of two active duty Marines, if the Darkest Day was to ever visit upon my family and these yahoos decided to show up I’d appreciate a large crowd to drown them out. It only seems fair and logical to me for civilians to attempt to protect in death those who would and often have protected us in with their lives.
Ok, so I know that this is the Pit, and perhaps I’d be better off reposting this as a IMHO thread, we’re here already, so c’mon. Nobody’s got anything on why it’s better to ignore Ol’ Phelch than it is to stand strong and together to oppose him and his hate? To overwhelm he and his likes as countless others have against the Aryan Fondlers or the Klan, or who have you?
I remember when I was a kid and the “Nazi” elements got the permission to march through largely Jewish Skokie Illinois, and the major news story wasn’t just that those asshats had assembled, but that so many more had turned out to oppose them and what they stood for. Why do we let this fucker and his few overwhelm we decent folk?
Like I said in my previous post, I’d rather explain to my grandmother at my brothers funeral that all those people are here supporting what my brother, and her brother had done, not why there are people waving “God Hates Fags” signs outside of our funeral.
They don’t always do that anymore, especially if it’s mostly the younger ones. “Sob” Time and fame have passed me by. But they will yell, especially if you stop to glance at them, or even take a picture.
No, dude. We don’t know why it would be better to ignore Fred. We do know it would be better for him not to get massive media attention, but he should never be ignored.
Mocked, though? Mocked works. Which is why I love the ‘Comedy Revue’ sign. It might just piss him off enough to commit a violent act upon the bearer.
