Sight unseen, Fable, Dino or Zipper I think. Young enough to be trained and least likely to have genetic flags from my POV.
Don’t trust Chows, so I’d have to pass on the Chow mixes, in case they are too Chow-like. I do like Pits, BUT…the dog aggressive thing is just too much work from my POV. I love my friend’s Pit mix ( as does one of my cats ), but he just is too much work to deal with around strange dogs. Terriers in general = hard to train, all to often. Shepherd mixes can sometimes be a little prone to shy-sharpness.
So the younger non-Chow lab mixes and to a lesser extent the Heeler mixes look like the best bet for me. Note that this is obviously without “interviews”, I of course wouldn’t choose just based on a picture and short description and I wouldn’t automatically exclude any of them.
Carol, Drummer Too, and Mr. Buster are all trying to get my attention. But my cats are holding out for a Boxer with a squeaky toy.
So many of these dogs carry such sad expressions. I just want to hug and pet each one for a while. It is also sad to see how many of these are Pits or Pit mixes. It just says to me that there’s too many people still raising dogs for fighting instead of loving.
I like dachshunds and chihuahuas so the d/c mixes strike my interest.

The kitties. Dibs on Sherall.
I never would have said that before last spring but we failed at fostering and ended up with a half rat terrier/ half every other dog and he’s completely awesome. I think that carolina dogs and rat terriers have pushed corgis off the top of my dog love list.
Anyway, my pick is Anbu because I want so badly to rub her ears and because the expression on her face reminds me so much of my Holly.
Liz is beautiful too.
And this is why I try to avoid looking at stuff like this. I already have 3 dogs. I can’t handle any more. If I could, I’d have 4 or 5 but there’s just not enough room on my bed.
What caught my eye was pretty much the complete opposite: Boris there in the last row, a “Male-Pit”? When you could so easily have labeled him a Chocolate Lab mix? Come on, give him at least a chance…
So many dogs…
This is something I as a Finn just don’t ever get used to. I mean, here is the current list of dogs up for adoption at one of the biggest shelters in Helsinki. We bring rescue dogs over from Spain, Estonia, Russia and Serbia because there aren’t any here…
In my experience, I have had two Chow mixes. One was half Chow and half golden retriever. Her personality was golden all the way. She was very mellow, laid-back, affectionate, and very good with other dogs, children, and strangers alike. She considered everybody to be her friend. Not one sign of aggression from her in ten years. Her name was Mandy and she was much missed when she passed away.
Mandy (Yes, I took the picture with a cheap digital camera, and yes, I did keep her fur closely clipped, as she was a prodigious shedder.)
And I mentioned my Lab/Chow, Whitney, upthread. The aggressive qualities of the Chow were completely buried by the general affectionate and obedient nature of the retriever breed in both of my dogs. I might be hesitant to adopt a purebred Chow, but in my experience, mixed Chow breeds have been perfectly safe and gentle. I would not hesitate to adopt a mixed Chow again. YMMV.
Is Miamondes a misspelling of Maimonides or something? It’s such a strange name.
Also, Zoe. I’m driving all the way from New Jersey to get Zoe.
I can’t look, if I look I want and I really don’t want another dog right now. One more dog and I won’t have any room to sleep at night.
You guys are REALLY tempting me with the descriptions though.
These beasties are in Tucson. I think it is safe to look, as you are probably too far away to actually be tempted to come down here and scoop one up.
I wish I hadn’t looked at the kitties. I just adopted two (obligatory picture here and I don’t need any more. I always feel so sad for the older ones since their odds of being adopted are lower. If I had room I would take all those 6 year olds.
I’d be happy with any of them, but it strikes me that Puppy Power is in desperate need of a new name.
Nina Two, Tonton and Tessa are all adorable. I was trying to stay away from puppies but I’m a sucker for a brindle.
I think this is a good way to approach adopting a pet. When I adopted my cats, they had been at the shelter for months and were some of the longest residents there (probably pushing the limits of how long they were allowed to be there since that shelter unfortunately does have to euthanize pets that don’t find homes). I think other adopters passed them up because they were adults (it was kitten season) and they were ordinary looking cats. However, they have fantastic personalities. One is just the most ridiculously friendly cat ever.
There are so many good animals in shelters. A lot of people adopt based on the animal’s looks or how young it is and the good family pets don’t always get a chance.
As for the OP, I would probably adopt Wanda or TonTon. I like pit bulls. They don’t deserve the reputation people give them.
To be honest though I’d love to be able to adopt a dozen dogs.
Oh! Look at Moocha! What an adorable pooch!
I suspect the location of Tucson has something to do with it. Some cities have more, some less. Tucson homes all seem to have dogs IMO, even if they can’t afford to maintain them. I’m not sure if this is a dog-fighting thing (seems fairly big in that town) or if it is just a local culture thing.
Perhaps it is considered a safety thing. When visiting a friend who lived in a working class part of town, every home had one or more dogs. Larry claimed the neighborhood was safe because all strangers were noticed with massive barking. Including me. ![]()
Cinnamon looked completely goofy and jumped out at me. Milt reminds me of my current dog, so he might be a good choice, too.
Oh, I like Mr. Buster too! My first dog was, going by appearances, the same sort of mix, with maybe a little more doxie than Chihuahua. I got another dachshund from the shelter, and Nathan('cause he’s such a good hotdog!) is the love of my life.
