"Pieces" of You Others Can See

Do you use a large, high-speed laser printer in your workplace made by a Huge Printer manufacturer? I had a role in its development.

If you live in the Boise area and recall seeing a guy with brown hair and glasses driving a teal Nissan Sentra and heard him listening to heavy metal music, that was me!

If you have received newspaper inserts for retailers such as Pepboys, Goody’s, Qwest, Firestone, Macy’s West, Home Depot, or any one of about 30 others, I may have told them to put it in your ZIP Code.

If you’ve ever used Windows 2000, a teeny tiny bit of the code I wrote is in there somewhere.

In Colorado: If you’ve lost your job, found a job, been injured on the job, gotten screwed on the job (figuratively or literally), applied for a petroleum storage tank, school design or explosives permit(!), You did so on computers I try my damndest to keep up and secure.

Where is this exactly? I’ve been on I-70 through Missouri and probably stopped at a truck stop so I might have seen you!

As for me, if you’ve ever flown in the US then someone in the plane was using information that came from my office. If you are a pilot and are IFR and fly west of the Mississippi except for Texas then you have used on of my IAP books.

Hmmm… If you invest your funds with either of two banks that merged with each other earlier this year, I help keep your information secure and reliably available.

And if you’ve visited h2g2.com (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy official website), you’ve possibly read an article, poem or short story that I’ve written.

If you’ve listened to NPR in the Florida Panhandle (one news station and one classical station, with repeaters) and some points south, in the last three years, you’ve heard my voice and some program material that I either created or fixed up on the computer or produced live. You may also have heard my voice if you watched the PBS TV station; I did some of the day-and-time tags on their promos, too.

If you have read anything in the last 40 years (books, magazines, newspapers, advertising, mail, internet, TV, packaging, CDs, signs), then you’ve probably read type that I’ve designed or developed.

And if you have a painting or photograph hanging on your wall, there’s a **slight **chance it was done by me.

And if you have a CD by the North Coast Men’s Chorus, it was designed by me (and I’m one of the singers).

Until very recently, I worked for a mail order company doing database development for their website. If you order something from this company and get an email when your item was shipped, backordered or cancelled, or go to their website and check the status of the order, that is (or was) me.

If you had anything to do with Hazardous Waste in Alabama in the last 15 years, you have followed (or ignored) regulations I helped write.

If you bought or refinanced a home in Utah or Iowa in the past year, there’s an excellent chance I decided if you needed flood insurance or not (and a slight chance if it was in Virginia or Minnesota). If your mortgage has been bought/sold or paid off or your lender has been audited by FEMA since July, there’s a similarly good chance I handled a database record with your name on it.

Let’s see…

If your kids went to Raymond Elementary School in Raymond, MS in 2003, there’s a chance I was in their classroom as a TA.

If you lived in the ghettos of Baltimore in 2004, you might’ve seen me passing out fliers for Bon Secours.

If you were at the Women’s Rights March in D.C. in April, you may have walked past me.

If you rode the Staten Island Ferry on Halloween this year, I may have been one of your fellow passengers.

If you live in California, there’s a decent chance I’ve been in your backyard (or frontyard) looking at the power lines, making sure your trees con’t grow into them and burn your house down. Your welcome.

If you eat food grown in California or Japan, there’s a good chance I’ve been at least somewhat responsible for the quality of the research that went into getting FDA approval for the pesticides used.

If you registered for a username at a major online sports site (no, not that one - the other one!), you would have used my code.

Anybody who’s worked with Big Blue in the past 5 years has likely read training materials written by me.

I’ve also written articles for Kevin Smith’s Movie Poop-Shoot.

I’ve performed stress analysis on components (valves mostly) on the Space Station, F-22, JSF, Gulfstream V, MD-90, the newer 737s, along with tangential work on other projects, such as the 777 and the B2.

I’ve trained people to use engineering analysis software to analyze a whole bunch of other stuff you encounter here and there.

If you’ve had cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation within the last 20 years there’s a small chance the lens was milled, drilled or measured using code I wrote.

If you or someone you knoe suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and a Defibrillator was used it’s likely that I had a hand in building it.

I thought of a better one.

If you bought natural/organic foods during 1999-2001, there’s a very high likelihood that the person who scanned it out of the warehouse has called me for tech support.

Damn, I was gonna start this thread, and then got sidetracked. But why is everyone being so coy? panache45, what’s the type?

If you’re into jazz and like reading about it, you may have seen the magazine I design. (Hello again, picker)

If you live in Virginia and seen (or purchased!) this license plate:

http://www.dmv.state.va.us/exec/vehicle/splates/info.asp?idnm=GHA

That was designed by me.

If you went to through training or worked at a certain Norfolk Naval Air Station command, its detachments in Florida or Cherry Point or Naval Air Station Brunswick’s SERE school from 1988 through 2001 (at least), then you’ve probably seen/used audiovisual materials that I created. HM-12, NAMTRAGRUDET and VAW-120 in Norfolk used some of my stuff too.
