Pilgrim Chorus Lyrics

Anyone know where I can find the lyrics to the Pilgrim Chorus from Wagner’s Tannhauser ? I’d like to be able to sing along, but I can’t make out the words…of course, not speaking German doesn’t help.

(And Chuck Jones fans…thanks, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t begin “Return, my love…”).

Hmmm
Try this

these are the english and german lyrics
im not sure of one line in the english ver.

Once more with joy O my home I may meet
Once more ye fair, flowr'y meadows I greet
My Pilgrim's staff henceforth may rest
Since Heaven's sweet peace is within my breast.
The sinner's 'plaint on high was heard
On high was heard and answered by the Lord
The tears I laid? before His shrine
Are turned to hope and joy divine.
O Lord eternal praise be Thine!
The blessed source of Thy mercy overflowing
On souls repentant seek Ye, all-knowing
Of hell and death, I have no fear
For thou my Lord are ever near.
thsi is the line im not sure about -> "therefore will I praise God my life long."

Alleluia!
Alleluia!
eternal peace eternal peace
Beglückt darf nun dich, o Heimat, ich? schauen,
und grüßen froh deine lieblichen Auen;
nun lass’ ich ruhn den Wanderstab,
weil Gott getreu ich gepilgert hab’.
Durch Sühn’ und Buß’ hab’ ich versöhnt
den Herren, dem mein Herze frönt,
der meine Reu’ mit Segen krönt,
den Herren, dem mein Lied ertönt.
den Herren, dem mein Lied ertönt.
Der Gnade Heil ist dem Büßer beschieden,
er geht einst ein in der? Seligen Frieden!
Vor Höll’ und Tod ist ihm nicht bang,
drum preis’ ich Gott mein Lebelang.
Halleluja
Halleluja
in Ewigkeit, in Ewigkeit!

Alleluia indeed- it’s 10 years later, but here’s your answer, jsc1953!

O, thank god. My pilgrim’s staff henceforth may rest.

(I actually think I got my answer via Google about 10 years ago. But thanks, anyway, EllenB)
