Pillsbury Biscuit Doughnuts -> UK?

My dad made some doughnuts from Pillsbury’s biscuit tube-things a couple times when I was young. (You just poke a hole in the middle, fry them, and then drop them in a paper bag with a layer of powdered sugar at the bottom and shake.) Delicious.

I was just talking to a friend in the UK who is home visitting his family for Easter and thought to recommend for him to try this. But they don’t seem to have Pillbury there. Is there anything that would be similar in terms of texture and salt content that you could buy in your average supermarket there? (If we have any Britains who have tasted the Pillsbury stuff.)

Barring anything instant, what would be the recipe for dough like this?

Perhaps best to just ask for a from-scratch dough recipe?

Doesn’t have to be pillsbury, any canned biscuits will work. in fact I have found the cheaper the brand the better they work.

Try cinnamon sugar.

OMYGOD I haven’t thought of these in years. Do you do it in Crisco or will any oil do? I’m gonna rustle up a bunch one day soon.

Hm, I’ve done some further searching, and it seems like scones are pretty identical to American biscuits. Anyone know of a cheapo brand of pre-made scone dough that would be sold on the East coast (from London)?

I used to use peanut oil, but for the last few years I use a extra light olive oil. You want it pretty hot so they sizzle and puff up real quick, shake up with sugar, cinnamon or just about anything, like coconut, choco bits, chopped nuts, etc. while they are still hot. In fact poking a hole in them is not required, without the hole you can squirt in a little raspberry jam or something. You can also just tear bits of bisquits off and make Doughnut Holes.

“Biscuit” means something slightly different in Britain.

:smack: Arrg! got me again.
