I like pineapple upside down cake, and I like strawberry cake, and I like pineapples and strawberries together. I’m thinking of making a PUDC with strawberry cake mix rather than yellow cake mix. Yes, I DO use cake mixes, yes, I AM a heathen. Get over it. My question is, has anyone here done this, and how did it come out?
No idea, why don’t you try it and see? If it isnt very good you will only be out a few dollars, it isnt as if it needed black and white truffles and gold leaf =)
I’m diabetic, so I really don’t eat much in the way of cake. And this cake is going to be for my birthday, and it’s the last cake I’m going to make in this house (my grandparents’ old house), so it’s not a question of money, you see. I just wanted to make this last cake special.
I’ve never tried it but I don’t see how it can go far wrong.
One suggestion. Get some whole strawberries and put them in the centers of the pineapple rings.

Yes you can. In Hawaii, we have discovered you can use any cake mix you like. What makes a pineapple upside down cake yummy is the caramelized brown sugar at the bottom.
. . . and you can give it a creative name, like the Upside-Down, Flint-Rubble-Bodoni Cake!

cooked strawberries are yucky when they are whole and plopped down on top of something, if you do want to decorate with whole strawberries, bake the cake, and make a sugar glaze and dip the whole raw berries in it, and let it set up hard [or you can roll the berries in a beaten egg white wash and roll it around in superfine sugar for a sparkly frosted effect if you do that, you can also treat mint leaves as part of the garnish]

It sounds like it would taste great. I have used pineapple flavored cake mix to make pineapple upside down cake. I thought it would be too pineapple-y or too sweet, but it was excellent. I think that strawberry cake mix would taste great.
I made the strawberry , cake mix, pineapple upside down cake today and its fabulous. GREAT TASTE EVERYONE LOVED IT.I was very skeptical with these negative reviews. But amazing.

Some years ago my mom wanted a recipe for PUDC that would be baked in a cast iron skillet. She made a recipe request in a magazine called Reminisce, expecting maybe a couple dozen replies. Boy was she(and the mailman) in for a surprise.
The recipes started arrining in droves. Mom had intended on replying to the ones she recieved but there were simply too many. They came from every state and even a couple from overseas. By the time the counting stopped at least twelve hundrend recipes had arrived. One even came from a distant cousin that noticed the name and sent a genealogy connection along with a recipe. Mom still has a huge notebook with some of the recipes.
She also bought a nice gift for the mailman that Christmas.
I very much want cake now.
