Someone asked me to make them a cake, which involves mixing a box of angel food cake with a 20 oz. can of crushed pineapple, juice and all. Ever hear of this?
Tried it. It’s a Pinterest thing. Mine turned into this weird rubbery mess that overflowed the size pan it called for – it did taste good, but the texture was very off-putting, to me. YMMV
Heard of it. Pureed fruit is often used as a substitute for eggs and oil in baking. However, by using a can of pineapple (as opposed to say, unsweetened applesauce or pumpkin) you’re adding even more sugar to a product that’s already incredibly sweet, so I predict it will be inedibly sugary, unless you have a real strong sweet tooth.
Google dump cake.
Easy, quick, and actually pretty good!
With dump cake, which is a sort of cobbler, you don’t mix the ingredients.
Fruit juice is a great substitute for other liquids in cake. I always use the juice from the pineapple can when making pineapple upside down cake - but I buy the “fruit in its own juice” cans, not the syrup stuff.
I can see what a mess this recipe would make. Next time, try a bundt pan if you have one. It should be big enough and you won’t have to worry about leakage as you would with a regular angel-food cake pan.
How about sliced frozen strawberries instead? I have a one pound package in the freezer
I’ve had angel food cake mix with pineapple before. In a 9 by 13 inch pan.
It was fine.
Not so awesome we made it again.
But edible. Worth trying once.
I think it was a Weight Watchers thing when we tried it.
It’s dump cake.
If you added a can of cherries, my mother made it all the time when I was young. (She also made real cakes from scratch, but this was a fast, easy dessert).
Thanks. I might suggest to just make the cake separately and put the strawberries on top. I just wondered about the texture because I’ve only seen pictures of the end product and no clear idea of what it tastes like.
The only ingredient called for on the box mix is water. You are basically substituting the pineapple juice for the water and adding the moist fruit as well. You could substitute most any liquid you want most likely. I’ve make cakes with non-angel food mixes by adding only a can of diet soda. It works. They don’t turn out exactly like they would using the called for ingredients, but they aren’t bad.
