Pirate Master 6/7 - "Pirates, Guns and Money"

But that’s part of their “official pirate wear”!

This show is bad. The camera work is gorgeous - but the show is very, very bad. I’m not sure if it’s that the crew is full of really horrid people or if it’s a flaw in the way the show was designed. I’m leaning toward the former.

I don’t watch survivor - is that similar?

No. The officers and the captain have no vote in the elimination. The three of them nominate the three for casting adrift and the remainder of the crew votes either for one of the three or for mutiny.

I kinda felt bad for Kendra, I’m a bad swimmer too. OTOH, I (being a bad swimmer and all), wouldn’t have signed up for a show that was centered around a ship.

OK, I must’ve misheard it.

I think Joe Don is doing an OK job as captain, but he needs to tone down the swagger and spread the wealth a bit. Selecting a bosun’s mate was a good idea, although I don’t know for sure if Jay was the best guy. Still, not a bad pick. And selecting he weaker players for the black mark was a good idea in that it gave the crew something negative to focus on.

However, he was badly remiss in not doing something to a) celebrate the finding of the treasure and b) rewarding Azmyth (Dreadlock Guy) for finding the box and the treasure. I would’ve invited Asmyth to “dine with the captain” that night, made sure he got some rum, and given him a share of the captain’s haul. Maybe even encouraged the officers to chip in a bit, too.

I would also have singled someone out and let them know that there would be reward for that person whenever there was at least one vote from the jury that was not for the captain. Basically forming an alliance with someone to share the loot as long as the status quo is maintained. But since you can’t tell who voted for whom, you might as well just share the loot regardless. Maybe there’s an extra kicker if there is just one vote not for the captain. Or perhaps you make this alliance with two people.

Or… maybe one of the crew members should approach the captain with that idea. I’ll make sure you don’t get voted off as long as you give me a significant reward everytime you don’t get voted off.

I think there will be a good chance to come out ahead of everyone by becoming Pirate Master when only a few folks are left, and it will be much easier to do so then. Bide your time, me maties!!

It’s true that they have no vote in the elimination, but they do have to agree on a mutiny before it can happen. (See TWoP.) I think that’s why no one has bothered to vote for one. Joe Don treats his officers very well.

Kind of, but not really. There are challenges, and money at the end, any every episode someone gets voted out, but that’s kind of where the similarities end.

But … but … she’s a divemaster! How do you become a divemaster without being a strong swimmer? It’s … just … inconceiveable to me. Inconceiveable!

John Mace, I thought I heard the same thing as you regarding the mutiny … which is why I thought it was goofy that the show creators would allow for the Captain to remain Captain indefinitely, and for the Captain to keep the same Officers each week. You would think they would want a mutiny – how are you going to get one if the Officers remain protected by the Captain? (On preview, it does look like we heard right – thanks, Lib.)

Personally, I think that a Captain should be elected after every treasure hunt, not just after those when the “other” team wins. If the winning team wants to keep the same Captain, that’s one thing, but it seems more democratic (or something) to at least put the possibility out there for a new Captain each week.

Of course, that would not necessarily be very piratey, but … eh. I know what I like, and this particular leadership structure ain’t it. I guess I’ll have to dress up as an Indian and throw tea into the harbor next week while I’m watching to entice a revolution.

How long d’ya suppose it will take before a couple-three of the crew get pissed enough to agree to actively sabotage the Captain’s team? Since apparently everyone has to stay together during a treasure hunt, a simple, “Fuck you, Joe Don; I’m sitting right here on the edge of the deck, not moving” would suffice.

That’s what I’m predicting by Episode 4 or so. If JD doesn’t start tossing money around like, well, a drunken pirate, he’s gonna be toast. If I were in his place, I’d make sure that at least half of what I got as Captain got spread around to the people who were on my team, with a little bump for the person who found the treasure. I’d also make sure that even the members of the losing team got something. That way everybody would see that I wasn’t just out for myself. Then, when the crew gets winnowed down to the last few, I’d make sure everybody got equal shares in whatever we found.

Whoever did that would be slitting his own throat, so to speak. The team that finds a treasure all get something, so anyone who actively sabotaged a hunt would be giving up his own money, and preventing his teammates from getting any, too. That’s a lot of enemies, and the next time you got a black spot, you’d be gone.

Did anyone notice another jerkish move from J.D.? He hired a bosun (Jay?), paid him $2,000, but kept that payment secret. Then, at the court, when he was accused of not sharing the wealth, he blurted out that he gave the bosun money. What an asshole. I wouldn’t imagine Jay appreciated the ‘captain’ spilling the beans just to make himself look good.

Eh, I don’t think I like this show. The game portion is severely unbalanced. The sabotage just lets the lead team get further in the lead, and treasure hunts so far are simply a race. The captain can keep the rest of the crew weak such that he and his two officers being well rested and well fed gives an advantage to their team on the expeditions. A mutiny is impossible because the two officers have to agree. The voting comes down to popularity, performance in the treasure hunt has no bearing. They should have some kind of immunity reward.

Seems like it would be fun to be on the ship and climbing the sails and pretending to be a pirate, though. It’d make a fun vacation, even with the work involved.

Yep, from wikipedia:

I’m sure there will be some interesting twists, and you gotta cut this cast a little slack-- they’re the first ones playing this game and don’t know exactly how it will play out. The next crew will have a real advantage. I’m liking it OK so far.

And, wikipedia also notes that:

When they explained that during the 1st episode, I took it to mean the total treasure added up would be $550k, but it’s obvious that that is what you get in addition to any treasure if you end up winning. So, you can make Joe Don look like he got chump change if you win.

I believe it’s a million total, John, with half spread out during the hunts and half for the final hunt. The winner will be the one who finds that half-million dollar treasure.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I guess at some point the treasure hunts will be every man for himself, although I wonder if whoever is the captain at that time will get some advantage.

There is some interesting strategy developing here. If you get elected Captain early, you are reasonably immune to getting cut adrift and get to rack up some early money. But, you are pretty much guaranteed to not win the big prize because if you ever lose the Captaincy, you’re toast immediately. OTOH, if you are in the crew, you have a shot at the big prize, but also face elimination each week.

Like other posters have said, I don’t like the fact that the treasure hunt is decided in almost the first minute. Once you’re even a little behind, there’s nothing you can do to catch up.

I also think Joe Don is a frickin’ idiot. And as someone else that was in the Navy (for 6 years), please give me a break with how your 2 years gives you all this knowledge about how to be a captain. (note: I swear that in the first episode he said he was in for two years, however I am unable to substantiate that by reading his bio)

I also agree with Otto in that the only reason I can see the crew not voting to mutiney is that nobody wants to establish the precident. Let’s face it, once you get to be captain, it’s a sweat deal. It’s also virtually certain that if you stop being captain you’ll most likely be gone pretty quick. So while part of me thinks he should share the wealth, the other part agrees that he should take what he can because once he’s out of that cabin he’ll be on a little raft with nothing but what he manages to rake in.
ETA: Or what silenus said.

As in Norfolk, Virginia? I was going to skip Harbour Fest this year (what with the new baby and all), but I might just swing down there for a little while to see the ship if it’s going to be there.

Yes. At Town Point Park, if this map can be trusted.

They told me that at events like this the tour is all above decks, so you’ll miss the crew and trainee quarters. Still plenty to see, and lots of other ships will be there, too.

They should make it a bit more like it was with real pirates and have some opportunity for anyone in the crew to challenge the captain. Then they could have some sort of one-on-one competition (anything but fire-making!), winner is captain, loser gets cut adrift.

They way I’d do it would be to give the opportunity just before the black marks are handed out. So if someone in the crew suspects that he’s going to get the black mark, and that maybe enough of the rest of the crew doesn’t like him, he might as well try the challenge. Or maybe someone would just decide that they could take the captain. In any case, if a crew memeber challenges, then there’s no pirate’s court, and no one gets to find out who would have gotten the black marks. Also, the specifics of the challenge should always be different, and not revealed until the challenge is made. That way, no one could make the challenge based on thinking (or knowing) that they’re better than the captain at, say, throwing boulders.

The problem with the show as it stands now is that there just isn’t much strategy that anyone on the crew can use. They don’t know what the teams will be, they don’t know who’s going to get the black marks, and as has been pointed out, trying for a mutiny is a huge longshot. It’s just way, way too tilted to the captain’s side.

Oh, it’s risky, sure. But remember three of the people on that team would be the Captain and the two mates, who we’re assuming everyone hates. Those three are on the chopping block first, and one would think that the new Captain of the winning team would be suitably grateful. You wind up irritating a couple other people, but also making six or seven people on the other teeam very happy.

In the short term, the quitter strategy seems pretty viable, especially if you’re someone like Louie who is clearly in Joe Don’s line of fire. Long term, maybe not so much, but hey. The game’s short.

Not that you asked (and apologies if this is goofy, but I am having server problems), but here are this week’s

DREAD PIRATE ROBERTS RANKIN’s:

WALKIN’ THE PLANK - Cut adrift and left for dead in Davy Jones’s locker
John - Still a smug, smarmy little tool, even when he isn’t around.
Christian - (Down from “Settin’”) - Poor guy. Big and strong and saddled on the losing team. Would that his impassioned speech to the Pirate Court had changed a few minds, but alas, they’re all kind of dolts.

DRINKIN’ WITH THE BILGE CAT - Up all night, got into a fight, and now so broke up they just might go home
Joy - (Down from “Swabbin’”) - Last weak sea sickness, this week land weakness, and bearing the Black Mark both times. Either her days are numbered, or she’ll end up winning everything.
Kendra - (Down from “Settin’”) - A dive master who can’t swim, eh? Is that like a pitcher who can’t get out of the 5th inning without giving up 6 runs? No, wait … that would make her a Phillie. But, still, a poor showing, and she’s rated as such.

SWABBIN’ THE DECKS - Sleep well, they’ll most likely kill you in the morning
Everyone else except those specifically mentioned (i.e., the rest of the girls, and Sean).

SETTIN’ THE ROYALS - Too sexy for the Poop Deck, but not quite ready for the Lido Deck
Louie - (Up from “Swabbin’”) - Spared from Pirate Court this week, but most definitely NOT under the radar. Most likely to benefit from (and perhaps engineer) a mutiny at this point.
Azmyth - (Holdin’ Steady) - Stupid name and tragic hair notwithstanding, he’s smart enough to solve the puzzles and find the treasures, and also smart enough to stay the hell out of everyone else’s way. Except for the fact that he might be fundamentally creepy – I just can’t tell – my favorite now that Christian is gone.

MAPPIN’ THE TREASURE - Knows where the bodies are buried and ready to take the wheel
Ben - (Holdin’ Steady) - Picked to remain an Officer by J.D., so he has at least one ally … for now.
Cheryl - (Holdin’ Steady) - Picked to remain an Officer by J.D., so she has at least one ally … for now.

TAKIN’ THE HELM - Hoisting the Jolly Roger and sailing off towards the sunset (will be changed to “X MARKS THE SPOT” when the eventual winner is determined - reserved for a maximum of two players until the final episode)
J.D. - (Up from “Mappin’”) - He didn’t get overthrown, so he still wields some power, but I suspect the worm will turn, and none too soon. Still, for now, he’s the man to beat.
Jay - (Up from “Swabbin’”) - Being Bosun either put him in the catbird seat, or else it makes him ripe to be picked off. Either way, he’s in a good position for now.

Props to mullinator, zut, et al.
