I think Jay made a mistake by telling everyone he got extra money from Joe Don, and then lying about how much. That gave some significant power back to Joe Don, who can now expose him for the liar he is if need be.
Also, does anyone understand the rule that allowed John to steal the compasses? Had I been Joe Don, I would have ordered the crew to hold him down and take them back before he was cut loose. Seems to me if John can steal them, the others should be able to steal them back.
I hope these guys have some sort of safe lockers or something so no one pulls a Mookie and peaks in someone else’s personal stash to see who is getting what. Or maybe, that’s part of the game as long you don’t steal it…
I just finished watching my tape of the episode, and I’ve done a masterful job of avoiding this thread all day.
Joe Don may be a good ship’s captain, but he is terrible as a pirate captain – for all the reasons everybody has discussed in this thread. The ideas I posted last week still hold.
Joe Don did a good thing by naming a bosun. He did well (under the game rules) by paying his bosun, although the pay was on the low side. He screwed up big time, as John Mace said, by blurting this out in front of the crew. The chief petty officer has just been revealed to be in the captain’s pocket? Bad idea.
And absolutely, the Cruel Shelf cut is screwing everybody up. Giving the pirates $200 each when you just pulled down $20,500 (after the split) – a 100:1 advantage – is an insult, I’ve lived through that in real life. (I got a grad school paper out of it, too.)
I am very surprised that there were no Mutiny votes. If Joe Don stays in command next week and continues to sit on his 50% cut, I hope he and his $60k will be cut adrift.
An insult? The Red Crew lost – badly!! They had one crew member who couldn’t swim, one who couldn’t walk without hurting herself, and one big galoot who stood there with a big stick attempting to shoo away snakes! The simple fact is, they didn’t deserve squat ! And yet JD decided to share a small portion of his booty with these losers! These people shoudn’t be insulted, they should be grateful!
I agree that the Cap’n should be feeding his crew a little better. And while the captain eating better than the crew is OK, perhaps he shouldn’t be lording it over them quite so blatantly.
Stay tuned next week as Joy gets a paper cut from her Pirate’s Court Summons! Jeez Louise, has there ever been a reality show contestant this useless? I mean besides Cassandra?
Honestly? Because he was the only person who didn’t annoy me in any way. No, really. [unnecessary defensiveness] Look, I never said it made any sense. It just is what it is. I’ve already admitted that I’m a Bad Person; this is just another reason why. [/U.D.]
Although a bit off topic, I have to say that seeing the ship in real life down in Norfolk Saturday was a surprise. It looks nothing like it does on the TV show. Aside from the general “have sails” look. They either changed it a lot for the show, or they’re carefull to only shoot it from certain angles.
They changed the ship a lot before filming the show, but most of those changes are still there. The hull is still black and the faux woodgrain is still painted on some of the metal structures. They built a large enclosure around the stern, with windows even, to look more like the aft cabins on old ships, and that’s now gone. It may be the angles and the lighting, plus the ship just looks different on its own away from the docks. And you don’t know where to look for stuff they show on TV (pirate’s court is held amidships, around the hatch, with the officers looking down from the bridge, for example).
I wonder how close we came to crossing paths on Saturday. I got to the ship around 11:30, gave my dad the grand tour and said hello to a few shipmates. We wandered around for a bit, had some food, and I was back to the ship about 2:30 to look for anyone I missed.
Probably were there about the same time…we got downtown around 10:45, and were back to the car around 12:30 - 1pm. I know we caught the fake pirate sword fight at 12.
I think it was the covering over the aft section that threw me off. Seeing it without that aft covering was really wierd. That really changes the look of the ship. Especially since it was docked stern inwards it was harder to see the front of the ship. It’s also not as big as you think it is on TV. I remember thinking when we got down there that it was going to be either the German or Brazillian ship, because they were the largest there.
Nope, with my 2 year old girl, 3 year old nephew, newborn baby, and recovering wife there was no way I could get to actually go onboard any of the ships. So I had to admire from a distance.
