Recommend me some good instrumental pirate background music. Like the type you’d hear waiting in line for Pirates of The Carribean at Disney World. The sort that’s primarily accordion or whatever that other box-like instrument is. I’ve searched Amazon but I find more “sea shanty” type stuff with singing.
Most likely you’re looking for Jigs, Reels, Polkas and Hornpipes as they are the most common musical forms we associate with Pirates. See if anything from this list sounds right to you:
Thanks, that site looks promising. I’ll check it out at home tonight.
Well, there’s always the Yarrrrrrrrdbirds.
What?
The soundtrack for Pirates of the Carribbean might be what you seek.
Arrrrrrr, it’s off the plank with ye!
What? Oh, um, er …
Parlay!
That still works, doe nit?
BTW: that other box-like instrument is called a concertina.
Lumpy beat me to the punch. Two things:
1- When I was in Prague, I saw at least three street musicians playing the concertina. Czech folk music might be a good place to look.
2- Black Heart Procession has always sounded pirate-y to me. But there’s singing, so it probably won’t work for you.
Along the lines of what Birdmonster suggested: Songs From Hungary & Romania. The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania certainly has a pirate feel, as does some of The Bartok Album. Gypsy Folk Music of Transylvania and Voyager: Hungarian Favorites also might be of interest.
This is a classic whalers song: http://www.revolocien.com/mp3s/chest.mp3
I’m just lucky I thought of the name. Googling for “squeeze box” was no help at all.
Wait, are you implying that “Squeeze Box” by The Who isn’t a song about a woman playing the accordian?
How about the soundtracks to the Monkey Island adventure games?
A good Clancy Brothers collection and parts of the soundtrack to Master and Commander should do the trick, I think.
Way, haul away, we’ll haul away Joooooe…
Hey! Threads about pirating music aren’t allowed here, you know that, and I’m asham—
[sub]Oh, wait.[/sub]
Actually, my favorite pirate song, although not what you’re looking for, is the Gilbert & Sullivan “Pirate King.”
Clancy Brothers, eh? Not what I was looking for but good nonetheless.
The hurdy-gurdy has been around in one form or another for a thousand years, according to that site. Does anyone happen to know if there’s a hurdy-gurdy influence in pirate music?
For sheer portability, I bet the “Jew’s harp” (a.k.a. mouth harp) was carried around by a few pirates.
Hey, Tom Clancy (not that one) was in Swashbuckler, after all!
How about pirate music from a pirate band.
