Pirates of the Caribbean: It's rated "Arrrr!"

Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom? Slash is so of the good.

Thanks for the heads-up; maybe I’ll see you around there.

“pirategasm” has a lot of good stuff, I’ve found. What pairings are you into? I’ll drop ya some links.

And no underthings? That’s even better! I think that I’d better fit the actors for the costumes personally, though. Just to make sure that we get the best fit possible.

Trying…deperately…to…remember…Gibb’s…costume…

I really didn’t pay attention, but I can look for pics and get back to you. I know far more about female costume than male, andI don’t know that much about working class dress, except that it tended to be simplified versions of outmoded costume.

Will’s final outfit isn’t really Cavalier- it’s just the hat and cape (with the shirt collar outside in genuine Cavalier fasion). The rest is his basic boots/trousers/shirt/vest, which are a plain 18th style, although the coat is a bit wrong.

I’m still working on what period the purple dress Barbossa gets Elizabeth to wear is from. I’m guessing mostly fantasy. It looks very romance novel, and not very 17th or 18th.

Okay, I thought I was hep, but I guess I’m not. I know what slash is and all that, but what’s “t3h s3xx0r”? I can sort of get it through my basic knowledge of 133t5p33k, but I just want to be sure…

Back again with some thoughts I meant to spread around earlier -

-Interview with POTC producer indicates writers may have had a down in the mouth Burt Lancaster-ish pirate in mind for Captain Jack. I’m glad Johnny D. chose Keith Richards as a role model instead.

-I had never seen a movie with Johnny Depp before POTC, and this from a person who loves movies. I guess I really do live under a rock. But a side benefit of Pirates has been seeing Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, and Gilbert Grape. (It’s been the Depp film fest at our house this month.)All I enjoyed, but the latter two have become 2 of my favorite films, I think. Or maybe I just needed some gentle flicks at this point in time.

[Ok, my POTC/Johnny Depp obsession ends now…back to LOTR. Hey escapism gets me through till the divorce is done…tho Tolkien did say escaping is not a bad goal. At age 50 do I have to put away childish obsessions, or do I get away with them forever here in America, land of eternal youth?]

I’m guessing it translates to “the sex.” i.e. dirty stories!

I’m on Ch. 2 now.
This line did me in “No. Bad William. No biscuit.”
I’m so glad there’s no one in here now

I joined pirategasm last night (“arrrrrrgasm” would have been a much better name…) and you’re right; there are some people doing good work there. A breath of fresh air after Mary Sueville, er, Fanfiction.net. (I swear, if I find it necessary to put an OC woman into my story, I’m calling her Maria Susanna, just on principle.)

I’m a One True Threesome – and all possible combinations therein – fan, myself. I wish there was more W/J – it’s a universe of J/W out there!

We should start a separate fic thread. What say?

[hijack] Watch Ed Wood. It’s my favorite Johnny Depp movie, at least as good as Pirates of the Caribbean.[/hijack]

this one looks great, can’t wait to see it.

Oh, good, I thought I was the only one doubled over in laughter. I’m around chapter three, but I was skimming and got confused, so I’ll be looking it over again.

This is another good OT3 story from FF.net that goes the adventure route.

As far as fics in LJ, it’s probably just easiest to link to my PotC recs in my memories section. If you haven’t read Of Shackles and the Sun yet, shoo and do so now.

We probably should start a PotC fanfic thread, or just a general fic recs thread. Anyone else wanna do it?

Look! A fanfic thread!

I have to bump this thread from the depths of Davy Jones’ locker. I just saw it yesterday and loved it. It was a bit long, but well worth it. Two things no one has mentioned:

-Keira Knightly, a deserted island, and a hell of a lot of rum. Some 13 year olds are going to hit puberty watching this movie.
-Am I the only one who was turned on by Ms. Knightly in the redcoat uniform, though I would have prefered that the British were Prussians in this movie.* I prefer women in green. Why was she wearing that anyway? Not that I’m complaining.

I’m off to see Bend it Like Beckham.

*I know. I know. Totally inaccurate, but still hot.

She was wearing the redcoat uniform because when she was stuck on the island she was clad only in her underthings - Barbossa had insisted she wear his old decrepit purple dress thing, and then he’d taken it away when he made her walk the plank. She couldn’t very well wander around the Dauntless in nothing but a very damp shift, so they found a uniform that fit her and had her wear that so she’d be at least mostly decent.

I saw it more as she thought she’d fight cursed pirates with the rest of the crew, and dressed appropriately for the occasion. However, I suppose that racinchikki’s explanation works, too.

teleute, the Commodore and the Governor gave her those clothes - they didn’t intend to let her fight pirates! They locked her in the cabin, remember, specifically to keep her from doing such.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too, but racinchikki’s almost certainly right; Poncington & co. would’ve figured a cross-dressing woman on a shipful of men was at least an improvement on a nearly naked (by the standards of the time) woman, although Elizabeth no doubt appreciated getting to wear something suitable to fight zombie pirates in.

Now, a related question: why, exactly, did Jack mention to Norrington that there would still be some danger to Elizabeth so that they locked her up? My best guess was that he wanted her alone in there so that she’d have a chance to sneak over to the Pearl and release his crew, but I have a feeling I might be missing something there.

I think Jack told him there was a danger to the future Mrs. Commodore so Norrington would leave him on the island and go back to the ship to protet Elizabeth. thus setting his (Jack’s) plan in motion. Instead, Norrington sent orders back to the ship to keep Elizabeth somewhere secure and stayed out on the boats, thus totally futzing Jack’s plan, which I don’t think Elizabeth figured into at all. He didn’t need her to help the crew imprisoned on the Pearl because he was going to free them anyway once his plan succeded.

Racin, I wasn’t saying that Norrington and the Governer gave her those clothes for her to fight pirates in, I’m saying that she was planning to fight pirates, and dressed appropriately. Although you’re right, it’s more likely that she was given those clothes 'cause what she had on wasn’t that appropriate, then that she took the clothes herself.

Can we piece together what kind of timespan the movie takes place in?

There’s a day and a half of Port Royal, however long it takes to get to Tortuga from there, at least one night in Tortuga (plus however many days it takes Gibbs to round up a crew), say 4-5 days to the Isla de Muerta, maybe a day from there to the marooning island, the same time back to the Isla, then home to Port Royal, and a final half-day there, though that doesn’t really count.

I’m getting two weeks, at the very least. Anyone else care to venture a guess?
