Pissed at arbitrary and stupid board rules

Sure - if you have to ask then it’s too long.

Yes, but at what monitor resolution? Right now, I’ve got a crappy little 800x600 monitor (my other one blew up), so a relatively short sentence might take up two lines, or even three, while at a 1600x1200 resolution, that same sentence might just be a single line.

I know it may seem silly, Tuba, but it would kinda suck to have someone get in trouble just because a mod or admin has a smaller resolution than they do.

Yeah! Damnit Tuba, stop reading the SDMB on your palm pilot!

Yeah, that was my initial thought. I understand the sentimental value of the Wally sig, but jeez Louise, who cares?

SPOOFE - How about keeping it at four lines when you view the signature on your monitor? That would ensure that most people would only see four lines. I would suggest a signature not having more than 4 lines at your resolution or 1024 x 768 (for Windows people) or 4 lines on a 16" monitor (for non Windows users) should be acceptable. If you’re not sure about your signature, e-mail an administrator and ask.

I ranted in the OP because I felt I was being unfairly singled out and read an implication that I was trying to get away with something that may not have been there. In the 3 years I’ve been here this is the first and only time that I remember that I’ve posted a thread like this. In any event, Shayna’s suggestion was a good one, and my sig now meets the 4 line rule without being all run together. shrug I’d had a hard day, I needed to vent, I vented. It’s over now, as Geobabe said, I’ve got a lot more important things to worry about.

Yeah, no kidding.

Like our fantasy baseball draft in 2 days!! Or, to be more precise, 1 day, 22 hours, and 44 minutes as of this writing!

I assume that the above was one of those fucking posts that you need to fucking edit? After all, it doesn’t make much fucking sense.

Well, you’re certainly going to be popular around here, Quagmire. Hope you’re not around long enough to enjoy it.

I personally think signatures contribute about as much to the board threads as “me too” posts. If you have something interesting to say, then say it, but repeating clever bon mots over-and-over in non-related threads is just plain boring and only adds a lot of meaningless noise.

In any event, with the new board software I was heartened to see that, within the User Control Panel, Edit Options has a toggle for specifying whether or not you want to eliminate signatures in the thread displays. I gladly chose “yes”. So, in the discussion about the nature of signatures, I am officially agnostic, since I am not even sure if they exist.

Given the problem seems to lie with the underlines used as spacers, I was going to say that I support Weirddave’s right to say “_____________________________________________” as much as he likes.

But then I realised that this looks like censorship, only censorship in some language that uses really long swearwords. Hmmm… Welsh, perhaps? (Bad Welsh joke: tattletale stands up in class and shouts “Please, Miss Jones, Owen Evans just said a thirty-four letter word!”)

So, do we get Welsh phrases like

Mae’n oer _____________________________________________ heddiw. *(It’s ***ing cold today.)

Beth ywch enw _____________________________________________ chi? *(What’s your ***ing name?)

_____________________________________________ chi, mam_____________________________________________. (*** you, mother******)*

Let’s face it, it would make S4C a lot more interesting. (Pobol y _____________________________________________ Cwm , anyone?)

(And, by the way, I was born in Glamorgan, so I’m _____________________________________________ing well allowed, OK?)

I’m not one for casting aspertions, and I advocate lieniency on “newbies”, but your manner indicates you are far from new
With that in mind,who’s returning sock are you, exactly?

Um. Er. Nobody’s sock, only myself. Attempting to be amusing, and evidently failing. For which, therefore, I apologise.

Why isn’t the sig limit enforced in the code in member.php? Unlike sock-spotting or jerk-banning, this form of moderation can be easily implemented in software with (if I remember my PHP right) something like :

if (strlen($sigline) > 100) {
die “Your sig is too long! Shorten it to 100 characters please.”;
}

Don’t worry, t’weren’t you that he spake of.

If you modify the software Jelsoft will not support your installation. So we do not implement any changes that require modifying the source code.

Steve, it is amusing. Who knew it took so much to curse in Welsh.

I got it, and found it quite funny. Of course, you’d have to know at least a little about Welsh to get the joke. :wink:

Could you add JavaScript validation, or would that too be considered a change to the source?

OK I’ll bite, Steve.

So what is the Welsh word for “fuck”?

This is the pit, after all, so you’re allowed to tell me.
