I’ve read this whole thread and I still don’t understand why rule two was created. Rule two must have been created because the existing ‘don’t be a jerk’ rule and enforcement failed. When was that?
Creating a rule to address things that are already covered in existing rules is something I thought only the National Hockey League did (obstruction hooking).
Well, I’ll be one to join in. Ed, you ignorant asshole, go ram a unlubed rancid pineapple up your vajajay…of course without any physical harm or death resulting from it. And if this is the way you are going to continue to run this board, I hope Creative Loafing liquidates and you’re out a job and have to work a REAL job, preferably in customer service. You might learn a thing or two on dealing with customers.
Of all the ways to complain about the rule change, that has to be the single most juvenile, least productive one imaginable. Jeez-o, guys. I can’t think of a better way to ensure valid concerns get ignored, in fact.
Is it only abusive to tell people who believe in hell to go to hell? How can it be abusive to tell someone go to hell when to them, hell does not exist?
What if Hell, Michigan is one of their favorite spots? Is that abusive, or are you wishing them a happy vacation?
Well, yes, there is that. Nonetheless, on the odd occasion when the admins do stop by, it’s easier to get them to pay attention to the sensible posts if there isn’t a whole lot of low hanging fruit for them to respond to.
This thread is moving too fast for me, so I don’t know if this has already been noticed and brought up here, but…
Another serious problem with this rule against abuse is that it’s making people bring their abuse and insults to the front more quickly. They know that the party’s over when a mod shows up to tell them to cool off, so they’re dumping all the invective at the front of the threads to make sure they get their anger on record when they have a chance. Ironically, this is making some Pit threads even more heated than they’d normally be.
Under the old rules, we knew that we’d always have the opportunity to turn the heat up later if the target of our rage didn’t come to their senses. Now we perceive the risk of the window closing before we reach closure, and we’re responding accordingly.
Not much, apparently, since Ed’s intention of implementing these rules caused Giraffe to quit being a Mod. He obviously didn’t give weight to someone who was a already a Mod, so why should he listen to those who aren’t anymore?
As may be seen from my location, I’m not happy about this either, and I rarely post in the Pit. I think it’s trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.
You can also count me as someone who thinks that Rule #1 isn’t such a good idea. On the one hand, hashing out a problem with a mod action doesn’t necessarily have to be filled with vituperation. On the other hand, if you think a mod’s actions are asinine, you should be able to say so.
No, I’m just another longtime poster expressing my opinion. Note that it is MY opinion, not one fed me by a mod or admin, nor is it intended to improve my status with them, though some people seem to think that the only way somebody could disagree with them is if he were Ed’s sock puppet.
About the Pit? Surprisingly for me, my opinion about childish behavior in the Pit has remained the same for my nearly-ten-years here.
So after all the behind the scenes discussions, after Giraffe and Fluiddruid left, after all the complaints and questions here, he’s still trying to figure out what he wants. Brilliant.
I just want to reflect for a moment on what made the Pit-that-was so great.
Some perspective: the Internet is full of message boards, some going back quite a ways. Many of them are strictly moderated, and have no forum similar to the Pit. Others are completely unmoderated, so it’s nothing but a Pit – populated mostly by illiterate idiots.
I’ve never, anywhere else on the WWW, seen a forum that combined the freedom of invective, and (generally) high level of intelligence, logical skills and literacy to be found in our beloved Pit. Yes, sometimes you’d see nothing but simple-minded cursing, but then there’d be a masterpiece of well-deserved brutality by somebody like Cervaise. On a few occasions, it’s been like having Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce on the Board (if those gentlemen came back from the dead and said “fuck” a lot).
