My senior year of high school I was 12-0, 1.52 ERA, 165 K. I had a fastball that topped out around 93 mph.

I was contacted by a scout actually, from the KC Royals, but I told them I was enlisting in the Army. Turned me off real fast.

So, he could throw a major league pitch at 18, but went in as a grunt instead.

Now, the fact that once I got in, I didn’t get out for almost 30 years means 17 year old me wasn’t quite accurate about my future, but that’s not what changed my life about going to the academy.
