I have had this thread muted since it first started, I occasionally check back into it for my entertainment, but the fact that I may go periods of time without posting in it isn’t a sign of anything other than the fact I have to deliberately open this thread from my previous-post page since I chose to mute it.
I am unclear on what has been “exposed” or what “evidence” has been presented. I have a number of posters on ignore–I think it’s okay to list out who is on your ignore list, so here is my current list of ignored posters:
Joey_P
madmonk28
Banquet_Bear
Sunny_Daze
nelliebly
Beckdawrek (this is the only entry I have no ill will towards, she seems like a nice person but she posts a lot of threads that I am not interested in and usually with thread titles that probably annoy me more than they should, I have her ignored since we almost never communicate in the same threads anyway and I just didn’t want to see her threads listed in MPSIMS)
ASL_v2.0
If someone has made a bunch of allegations against me you or someone I don’t have ignored can repost them, and if I care to I will respond.
But I’m not going to unhide ignored posts in this thread since they are ignored for a reason.
Well that certainly explains things especially since ASL was the one who posted the allegations. Here are the first two posts. Can you read them? (Not sure how Discourse deals with this)
Oh, yes–I have always lied extensively about personal demographic data on these boards. A poster here tried to doxx me 15+ years ago and I have been very careful since then to always share incorrect and inconsistent information if it is information of any type that could be used to build a profile that would allow for identifying me in real life.
I would not expect anything that you could use to tie me into a real live person, that I have posted, to be consistent or accurate.
While the culture has changed a lot since I started posting here (social media for example was not widespread other than MySpace and people generally communicated on the internet with handles and other things to keep themselves anonymous.) I still believe in anonymity and it is not possible to actually talk about one’s real life and remain anonymous, unless you intentionally make it impossible for someone to take that information and identify you.
The most significant obfuscation I engage in is related to my real life age, while it is possible to guess at a range of ages from things I have said, I have deliberately never posted my actual birth date, current age or etc. It’s always off by +/- 5 years and not off by a consistent margin. I have also never shared where I actually live or what State I reside in, I intentionally chose Virginia as my fake State of residence because it is a) somewhat similar to where I actually live and b) I was familiar enough with the State to effortlessly maintain that illusion.
Without knowing my State of residence, where I grew up, or any specific age or date related things about me you would have a tremendously difficult time identifying me in real life.
Maybe you’ve never been doxxed or known someone that has, but taking deliberate steps to prevent it is just common sense, not something that makes one a “loser.”
That’s fine. You should have zero expectation of honesty about personal data shared online, there is no valid reason posters on the SDMB should have accurate real life information about another poster unless that person chooses to share it.
I don’t post things about myself here for personal edification it is simply a conversational necessity, when engaged in certain discussions, to either share a personal anecdote or reference something from one’s personal life. However, to do that also exposes you to risk of being identified, so my convenient answer (which I do on all the boards I post on, not just the SDMB) is to change enough specifics that you couldn’t track me down. My only purpose for posting here is my own entertainment, some people post here to form some sort of social bonds of community with people even extending into real life–I am entirely oppositional to that. It does not bother me at all for it to be assumed anything I say about my personal life is a lie, the veracity of personal anecdotes of mine are never significantly core to whatever discussion I am participating in.
This also isn’t a particular new revelation, I am fairly certain at least 10+ years ago another poster pointed out I had posted various personal details inconsistently, and I admitted then that I intentionally obscure details about my real life.
I just want to agree. I only lie about my personal history to avoid doxxing not to bolster my opinions with false claims of expertise that should give them more weight then they deserve.
The very fact that someone has gone through apparently and collected a large number of posts with personal details in them shows exactly how justified my concerns are. That is actually precisely how one doxxes someone on a message board. Enough small snippets of personal information, posted over enough time, and it is fairly reasonable to be able to doxx someone. It is likely a good % of this board’s posters are doxxable, and the efforts someone put to collect that information is not at all atypical with what I have seen happen in other boards where people have been doxxed.
In fact I’m pretty sure the various “ancillary” communities to this one have doxxed posters here multiple times.
As I said, I deliberately do not share personally identifying information accurately. I don’t believe in the concept of “bolstering credibility” on this board. There is no innate credibility, even reputational, on an anonymous message board. If someone chooses to go un-anonymous, then they could perhaps rely on real life credibility. However, that being said I do not deliberately misstate personal history if it relates to the anecdote I am sharing and the core message of that anecdote, specific details that could link back to my specific person will typically not be accurate.
Bullshit. Doxxing has never been allowed in any of the side communities and any posts doing so (which hasn’t happened in years) are deleted and the doxxer is banned.
Just so we’re clear. You, at some point, looked up who the senators and a specific representative were for a district in Western Virginia in the mid-70s, information literally nobody asked for, even though you didn’t actually live in Virginia at that time. And then you made a multi-paragraph post using this made up life of yours?
All so you wouldn’t be doxxed. Wouldn’t it have been easier just, you know, not to do that?
Do you realize nobody else here does insane stuff like this?
Frankly, you should just own being a pathological liar. It’s more normal than whatever batshit stuff you’re claiming now.
