Pitting assholes who send e-mails in response to forum posts

Sent.

There have been a few (and although they made reference to the SDMB, the messages did not betray the identity of the sender); one of them was just an ordinary threat of bodily harm, but not referencing any particular thread.
Another one was a message telling me that I am ‘a Horse’s ass’ in reference to an observation I made that usernames terminating in long strings of numeric digits often turn out to be trolls. I can’t recall the details of any of the others.

Maybe we could have a new thread in which people describe all the negative mail they’ve received from here.

So that’s what December & Zenster have been up to. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for posting that Coldfire. I always wondered what kind of flame emails the mods get. Any chance of posting a couple for our general amusement?

I’ve gotten several emails from here, all of them very polite. This doesn’t seem like a place that would care for flaming.

dantheman: Reverse-elitist? Saints preserve us! We shorely cain’t have the unwarshed knowin’ things!

Bah. It’s been an etiquette rule on Usenet since before your time, little man. It’s also the only way a place like this works. (Remember fighting ignorance?)

I really hate to be the one to break it to you, Derleth, but we’re not in Usenet. You might notice some differences if you look really hard.

You also seem to be misunderstanding what “reverse-elitist” means. That’s cool.

I haven’t gotten too much email since I’ve been on here, and no hate mail, unfortunately.

All the email I have gotten has been cordial, usually asking for something that I offered in a thread or to compliment me on something I’ve said (although that’s a rarity  )

I don’t see a problem with using email for something that would otherwise be seen as hijacking a thread, or wasting bandwith. Of course, using an email to tell someone to “shut up” is stupid. We’ve got the Pit for that for cryin’ out loud.

Oh, to be able to check out a Mod’s inbox on any given day…

I’ve had quite a few e-mails actually >smug< and ALL of them have been from ladies.
One of these ladies I hope to visit next year, the rest will just have to form an orderly queue

Were the 1920’s style e-mails?

Actually, I never thought of sending an e-mail to a particularly offensive poster (whose alais raises my hackles to this day)–I figured the e-mail would turn up in The Pit and wouldn’t life be just grand THEN!

I should put the poster on my ignore list, but I my curiosity about the next hostile and inane comment is greater than my distate for the immininet comment itself.

So I just shut up and deal.
Carry on.

I got a hate email a couple of years ago from some guy who didn’t like my website. It was such a shock that it actually brought tears to my eyes.

Haters suck.

I got some stupid mails meant for Dex and Arnold in response to an ATMB thread. Seems this one particular moron needed to get his posts deleted to feel like he had a life.

I forwarded his stuff to the Admins so they could have the several different addresses he used for me. Haven’t seen that fool back yet.

In Soviet Russia, e-mails post you.

I got nothing here…

Your site is bloody great.

I’ve just viewed your site. It was beautiful. It actually brought tears to my eyes.

Very nice work.

Oh yeah. Bollocks, bastard, shit and dammit! Rotten asshole emailers.

I got my very fiirst e-mail of this type just today. Seems some schmuck in my “Emigrating from Turkmenistan” thread in GQ decided he would pass judgement on my friend’s love life, in response to my request for assistance in helping her fiance get the hell out of a dictatorship with a horrendous human rights record. Apparently my 20-something friend doesn’t know how to pick men, or nice American girls should stay away from furriners. one of those two.

After a mod told him to knock it off, he decided to take it to e-mail. I thought about writing him back, but then he would have my name IRL, and I’m not that crazy about that idea.

I still think he’s a condescending schmuck, though, and if I get any more e-mail from him, I will block his address and report him to SDMB administration. (I wasn’t the one who called in the mods in my own thread, BTW; I don’t know whether someone else did, or they just stumbled across it.)

Some people need to get a life.

While I hate people who flame me by e-mail for board posts, I don’t like the idea of the SDMB administration doing anything about things that occur entirely off the board. If one allows their e-mail address to be visible (I don’t, anymore), then one chooses to be open to those sorts of messages.

UnuMondo

I had posted my e-mail address in that one thread, for an unrelated purpose; normally I don’t allow it to be visible. It was just extremely obnoxious and sneaky that he e-mailed me to get around the warning not to give unsolicited, unrelated, unwanted advice in a GQ thread.

I totally understand that the administration might not do anything about it, and I’m cool with that. I’m a grownup, and I understood the risk of posting my e-mail address. It’s not like posting my name, address, and home phone number, though. It pisses me off when people have no sense and no concept of personal space.

But you kind of have to expect that possibility if you publicly list your email address. It goes with the territory.

I expected the possibility, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still be pissed off and disgusted at the person who took advantage of it.
