Pitting Black History Month

psst! See you don’t know because the ZOG covers it up. But us black folk send out the Darkie Patrol during the month of February. Under cover of darkness, we invade the homes of unsuspecting whites. Once there we chain them in front of the tube and bombard them with Gangsta Rap videos and Chris Tucker films. Those MickeyD commercials are just a cover. Lock your doors, no is is safe

But by implication, the rest of the year is now NOT Black History friendly. Thing is, we’re not helping here. I personally don’t care what colour the man who invented the filament in a lightbulb was, or indeed that he was a man. By drawing attention to it, don’t you just highlight the problem? By saying what black people (specifically) did, don’t you just highlight what they didn’t?

In summary, it’s a welcome effort, but not much of one…
Cheers.

According to Snopes, you’re right, and the situation is surprisingly murky!

Well, I’ll amend my hijack: are the four most important people in U.S. history Washington, King, Columbus, and Christ? Columbus never set foot on what is now the U.S. mainland, never established any enduring colonies in the New World, and was almost certainly not the first European to stumble onto the Americas. And having a holiday for Christ when our Constitution specifically states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” is passing strange.

There are, sadly, STILL many people in America and probably around the world, who think the black man is a worthless, lazy animal. You and I may be Black HIstory friendly 24/7, but there are still millions who are not. You never know what might get through to the casual bigoted asshole to change their mind.

To me, it’s like this: I celebrate my birthday on September 25. It’s a day when people I like are extra nice and we have fun in my honor. It doesn’t mean the rest of the year I’m treated like shit, it’s just nice to have a day of recognition.

What I want to know is, why during the annual “I hate Black History Month” thread that is bound to be posted, does the OP always refer to BET? Do they think that BET is a government television station? Why never a mention of Spike TV (a network for men)? Why not Lifetime, or Oxygen, or Univision? Why is BET such a magnet for ire?

Jar, I always thought you were celebrating *my * birthday on 9/25…

Actually, I had done just that.

Of course, there’s also this thread right here, now on Page 3 with a grand total of two, count 'em, two posts by the OP, including the OP.

If you’d care to peruse for yourself, you can also find a number (too numerous to link here) of Threads With Seeming Animosity Towards Homosexuals and Religious People, too. Interestingly, threads in each of these three categories seem to have consistently won the highest number of replies to the OP, as opposed to threads like this turd, which, to be fair, only got 12 replies because the Mods tastefully closed it.

I’m sure the OP is merely a curious young student with a rather closed mind… not a
real racist, like, say, Archie Bunker was.

The OP from this thread:

… which went on for five fun pages with nary a peep from the OP until the thread went quiet for a week, at which time the OP bumped it back up with this:

Thankfully, everyone seemed to finally catch on at that point and the thread died.

Lots of points taken.

But the “every month beside Feb. is white history” agrument is getting stale.

It just not true, because it doesn’t have a label on it. American history has very few prominent black people, but the ones that are worth mentioning are mentioned. Same with the white people.

Black history month is like having a few pieces of candy, but saying you have more to make yourself feel better. It’s racist and unfair thing to do. Where is the Chinese history month? The Chinese were one of the main reasons that the first railroads were able to be constructed. What about European history month? Or, forget Chinese, what about just Asian in general? How about Mulatto history month?

ALL OF THESE PEOPLE ARE BEING OPPRESSED. PLEASE FREE THEM FROM THEIR HORRIBLE STRUGGLES AND BONDS BY DEDICATING A SECTION OF TIME TO PRETEND LIKE THEY’RE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVERYONE ELSE AND MAKE SURE WE ALL GIVE THEM PROPER RESPECT UNTIL NEXT MONTH.

Good work on the selective reading.

Tell us how you gave black people equality now.

Why is there not a Native American History Month? You can’t tell me they didn’t get f***ed at least as bad as the African-Americans.

As I have grown up, I have read every single year in my english class something either pretaining to women’s, jewish, or (you guessed it!) african american opression. This year, for summer reading, we had to read Nightfather (a story on Jewish opression) and A Long Walk to Freedom. This was for a 10th grade honors class. An over 700 page autobiography of the opression of Nelson Mandela. Granted, there was some good philosophy, but it was only a tenth of the book. In Ap World History, we learned about mainly Islamic civilizations and the Slave Trade. On the PSAT I took, there was an actual box asking if I wanted special “African American Scolarship Oppurtunities.” A 10th grade comprehension test we took had 72 questions, 34 of which had a liberal slant. In English class right now we are reading Things Fall Apart. It is not even written very well, but the back’s first words are The White Man…

Anyways, when I moved to North Carolina in 2nd grade, I did not even know about racism. In fact, I think I had black friends from where I came from, in retrospect. After seeing Fried Green Tomatoes, I drew the KKK for a Reflections Contest. The theme? Just open your eyes. I saw that these people in white hoods were bad. Well my teacher was black and she didnt take kindly to it.

I guess my point is that racism can come in two varieites: indirect or direct towards all groups of people. Right now in America we are facing indirect racism towards blacks and minorities (and direct towards whites). The group that is getting the direct racism has a polar opposite group that is getting indirect. It is a symbiotic relationship, really. After all, racism (to me atleast) is taking a group of people and highlighting them. Well, if you stress the bad ancestory of blacks, you are neglecting the history of whites, which would mean the whites were being directly segregated. That would mean, in turn, that stressing things like the BHM, is a form of racism. Indirect of course, but none the less.

Why not stress nothingness and leave it alone?

If I am being taught all of this African History and no “white” history, than I may tend to become more racist the more I am “taught.”*

*as in: “Shoved down the throat”

ZebraShaSha, I am not going to try to defend the slanted curriculum you say you have been fed, because I would like to know exactly what you read and didn’t read. An old college classmate of mine once described how she was going to go to the head of the English department to complain about a certain black professor who mostly assigned black authors/themes in a general survey course, as well as a certain lesbian professor who mostly assigned gay or lesbian authors/themes in another course. I sat down and took a look at our curriculum and what we had actually read over the semester. Classmate was wrong. Black authors and themes didn’t even come close to 50% of what we’d been assigned by our black professor, and it was a similar situation with our lesbian professor. My classmate felt swamped by blackness, but it was all in her mind.
I think it’s interesting that you do not consider anything from a Jewish or a female (presumably some of the women you have read about were white) perspective to be white.

the only thing about BHM that bothers me is the idea that black history, is not american history. I mean, no secret here, but black people in America have been screwed since day1 almost. The fact that so many were able to overcome those obstacles and contribute to what America is today should be celebrated as not just a black accomplishment, but just a great accomplishment, by a great person. Why even bother with color?

This is what also bothers me about Borders Books. Why have an African-American literature section? If a book is a fictional work, put it in the fiction section! A good writer will be read, why point out what color the author is at all? Does that mean all the other books in the store are by white people?? To me its basically saying your not a good enough writer to be with others, lets put you in a special place and call out something about you that will make people buy the book…and lets not notice how great of a writer you might be.

slight tangent there…back to your normal pit…

While I understand your point, I disagree that it’s bad to have a African American section in the bookstore. As an avid reader of black writers, it’s convenient to have a nice little section to go to…especially if the store is huge like Barnes and Nobles. Also, the section is not all inclusive. Most of the fictional books there are “classics” like The Color Purple or Native Son.

It’s no different (IMHO) than having a science fiction section or a romance section.

Do Barnes & Nobles usually have an “African American Literature” section? The one near where I live has an African American Studies section, which is for non-fiction books about the history or sociology of African Americans, but not fiction, or anything else by a black author that would better fit in any other section of the book store. And, presumably, not limited to black writers, although I’ve never checked.

Of course, the one I usually go to has a big display of literature by black authors right by the front door, but that’s just because it’s February.

It may be called “studies”, but often fiction is thrown up in there.

I just want to congratulate the SDMB on growing up.
We used to get three or four of these whiny little kvetches on February 1 (sometimes on January 28) and this year we had to wait until more than half the month had passed before we got our first one.

tom. You’re more of an optomist than I.

I attribute it to our landing on Mars. This year. Next year, maybe something different.

May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month. November is Native American History Month. (This information was brought to you by the Equal Opportunity Office of the Fort Carson MEDDAC and Evans U.S. Army Hospital)

I haven’t yet found a European History Month or a Mulatto History Month.

Also, it looks like October was German American Heritage Month, Polish American Heritage Month, and Italian American Heritage Month. March is Irish American Heritage Month.

September 26 is also Native American Day, at least in Texas. That’s all I can find so far, in terms of ethnic celebrations.
