Pitting Liberal - what a surprise.

I just assume that the local Costco where **Liberal **lives recently had an overstock sale on well poison. Gotta use all of it before its expiration date (sometime around the first Tuesday in November).

Well, you might have a point there. Frankly, I was reminded when reading his post of the “glass houses” adage.

In the past he’s had such an…odd…sense of humor, appearing to pride himself on making his sarcasm as obscure and abstruse as he can, that the OP you mentioned almost had me convinced that his whole support of Obama was one long mockery of partisan liberals on these boards. The bit where he quoted Twain at the end of it seemed like just the sort of thing he’d do to tip his hand. Either I was wrong (which is probably true), or else he’s continuing the farce.

I’ll be thrilled to see Obama get the presidency, but I know how one does and does not frame a debate if one wants honest input from folks one disagrees with.

Daniel

When I first read this, all I could think of was that guy a while ago who built a secret room in the back of a retail store, and came out at night to snitch food and supplies. And post on the SDMB.

Parody thread, anyone?

There were a few days during which there was no fellating early-morning post, and I got kind of worried for him.

The boy finally climbed down off the fence and got himself some politics, rather than the abstract contempt for all spectra of same. Can’t really say whether this is a good thing or no. Gotta say I’m a bit surprised, if you had said “**Lib’**s climbing down on the _______ side”, without filling in the blank, I would have guessed he would have jumped down on the conservative side.

But what the heck, he’s certainly better than some, and no worse than many. I’m into cutting some slack, if only because I need so much myself.

Indeed. Obama is apparently the savior of our nation (if not the world/universe/multiverse)and McCain is a doddering old sociopath staggering out in front of the Barrack Express waving his walker angrily in a futile attempt to delay the birth of a grand new age.

Silly me. I thought it was just another presidential election.

Yeah, they sure were — perjury, murder, insurrection, and treason:

The major issue in the Swiftboat stories is, and always has been, what John Kerry did in 1971 after he returned from Vietnam. Kerry cast a long dark shadow over all Vietnam Veterans with his outright perjury before the Senate concerning atrocities in Vietnam. His stories to the Senate committee were absolute lies…fabrications…perjury…fantasies, with NO substance. That dark shadow has defamed the entire Vietnam War veteran population, and gave “Aid and Comfort” to our enemies…the Vietnamese Communists. Kerry’s stories were outright fabrications, and were intended for political gain with the radical left…McGovern, Teddy and Bobby Kennedy followers, Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden, and the radical left who fantasized that George McGovern was going to be elected in 1972. Little wonder that returning soldiers from Vietnam were spit upon and castigated as “baby killers”.

[…snip…]

While the Commies were hanging on, innumerable U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Air Force members were being killed in combat. Every battle wound to Americans after Kerry’s misdirected testimony is related to Kerry’s untruthfulness. John Kerry contributed to every one of these deaths with his lies about U.S. atrocities in Vietnam. He likewise defamed the U.S. with our allies and supporters. His conduct also extended the imprisonment of the Vietnam Prisoners of War, of which I was one. I am certain of at least one POW death after his testimony, which might have been prevented with an earlier release of the POWs.

[…snip…]

I draw a direct comparison of General Benedict Arnold of the Revolutionary War, to Lieutenant John Kerry. Both went off to war, fought, and then turned against their country. General Arnold crossed over to the British for money and position. John Kerry crossed over to the Vietnamese with his assistance to the anti-war movement, and his direct liaison with the Vietnamese diplomats in Paris. His reward. Political gain. Senator…United States.

Letter from Bud Day to Joe Scarborough, 4 Oct, 2004
If you don’t think there’s anything wrong or mean about leveling those unsupported charges against a fellow combat veteran, then you’re an idiot.

Right. Did Kerry think for a second he wouldn’t piss some people off with his actions - including guys who might be in POW camps at the time?

I mean, Day was in the Hanoi Hilton and had to listen not only to the rebroadcasts of the Fulbright hearings but his captors saying how right Lt. Kerry’s testimony was. That kind of thing can lead to a bit of animosity, especially since the justification for keeping you locked up so long in awful conditions was that you were war criminals - and Kerry was now feeding this perception.

I heard a story about Kerry considering running - don’t really know how true it was, but it had him remarking to an aide that he was the best candidate of his generation to run for president, since he had been a combat veteran and a protester both.

If he genuinely believed that, he was a fool. The whole thing was so polarizing that his very vocal actions were bound to have people pissed off more than a generation later. Would they denounce him in overheated rhetoric? Perhaps.

But even with all of that, it doesn’t make Day a nutcase or senile. If it did, we’d have to ship half this message board off for psych evals, given the tone of rhetoric here sometimes.

Sometimes people are pissed off for a reason. John Kerry provided one. He was a controversial figure - and that may have allowed him to do some good at the time. But it probably forever killed his chances to be president.

I’ve liked Obama for a couple of years now - since well before he threw his hat in the presidential ring - and I still plan to vote for him, but I’m starting to understand - through some of the members of this board - what right-wingers are talking about when they say some Obama supporters are “scary”.

And, even as a liberal, the left/liberal bias on this message board is growing really thin with me. I don’t know if it’s gotten progressively worse over the years, or I just didn’t notice it as much a few years ago. Probably a little bit of both.

I used to believe the popular meme around here that the SDMB is left-leaning because it’s full of “smart” people, but I know of another board that is also general interest, science/“ignorance-fighting”-themed, filled with people just as smart, and leans just as far to the right as this board does to the left. I’m starting to think that most right-leaning people were bullied out of here (just like most left-leaning people were probably bullied out of the other board - I’m not giving them a pass, even in anonymity.)

Cite?

Yep ,he won The Medal Of Honor 40 years ago. That is not a free pass to be a swiftboater. It does not qualify him as anything but an ex soldier. His involvement in swiftboating has diminished any respect that an old soldier deserves. He attacked the service of another decorated soldier for political reasons. That is despicable. He attacked one of his own.

Yeah, I’m with Turnip, I’d like to know of this board…!

The OP was weak. The Swiftboating of John Kerry was a shameful episode and a particularly odious instance of the “dissent=treason” meme that really should have been taken out back and shot decades ago, and the sight of Bud Day, of all people, clutching his pearls and getting the vapours over General Clark’s comments is deserving of nothing but ridicule.

I would’ve been right there with him. And I hate McCain and voted for Obama.

Cisco:

Couple of things: I wonder if you are not mistaking contempt and disgust for the Bushiviks with being “leftish”. For myself, my politics haven’t significantly changed for forty years, so I was somewhat suspicious of Bush to begin with, but had no idea, not the slightest, just how much of a turd clusterbomb he would turn out to be.

Secondly, the recent Pubbie party has been more extreme than previously, largely due to the Unholy Alliance with the Trog fringe. What I mean is that if you are guaging what is “left” by a comparison to the Bushivik Party, your calibration is skewed.

And perhaps many of these people who are speaking their mind already held middle-left views, but were cowed by the hysterical wave of patriotic insanity that rolled over us all after 9/11. Toby Kieth, who ensuckens dead donkey balls, singing about imaginary battles in Tora Bora, and imaginary victories therein, just for instance. I’ve held unpopular opinions most of my life, doesn’t bother me none, but for others…maybe not so much. Don’t know, can’t judge, since it never occurred to me to shut up.

I’ve been puzzled by Liberal for the past few months. My guess is that the Liberal that is posting now is no the Liberal of half a year ago or more. And I’m serious about this. I think he might be sick or have taken a break and some nephew or something is posting under his name. I used to count on Liberal to be able to be objective, and to dissect the components of an argument pretty well. We didn’t always agree, but I thought he had intellectual chops. Now, not so much. In fact, just make that a flat “no”.

Come to think of it, maybe I was wrong. In which case, IGNORANCE FOUGHT!!!

Serious question: What, specifically, were these attacks on Cleland. I never heard anyone question his service. And losing his legs in a stupid accident (not his fault) is doubly tragic. But what, specifically, were these attacks? I’ve heard about “oh, they attacked Cleland!”, but never heard the actual attacks. Do you know what they were?

“He attacked his own.”? In defense of the lying, grandstanding turncoat that testified to the senate accusing his ex-fellow soldiers of heinous acts? This is RICH!

And since you’re throwing around accusations, what, specifically, did Bud Day say that bristles you so? Did he lie about something? Or do you just think that a POW that was tortured and had to hear lies spewed in the senate and have them used against him in prison hasn’t really earned the right to speak his mind. But please, YOU go right ahead.
