Pitting my fucking apartment complex and the workers herein

This fucking apartment complex I live in should be sued for stupidity and assholedness. (Too bad it’s not illegal to be a stupid asshole) When hubby and I moved in here last year we told them about a number of things that needed to be repaired. We FINALLY got the new dishwasher 6 months after I initially told them about it being broken Management changed hands in May so we told THEM about the problems (that have gotten worse in a year) We signed a new lease the first part of May and 3 weeks later they reduced the prices by 200 dollars a month. When we asked, we were told that since we weren’t new tenants we couldn’t get the lower price. Ok thats fine… Fast forward to last week. I had given one of the maintainence men a work order a month ago for EVERYTHING that needed to be fixed and last week the manager himself came to see the problems. He agreed that things needed to be fixed and said he would talk to his boss about it. Next day he called and said they would be having someone come in and start remodeling the apartment WITH US STILL IN IT! I reminded him that we have a tiny baby in the house and he said “well thats not MY problem” Yesterday I am awakened at 7:30 by the maintainence man hollering good morning after he unlocked and opened the door. He’s half way thru the living room when I get up and throw on my night gown. The baby starts screaming because this asshole woke him up yelling and I’m staggering out to see this prick standing there in the living room with a big grin on his face. He’s here to check the furnace. Ok just let me get fucking DRESSED first asshole but noooooo he proceeds to work on the furnace while I change a dirty diaper. Mind you I haven’t been to the bathroom myself, no coffee, not awake yet and this bastard STAYS there after I tell him to wait a few minutes for me to at least get dressed. I went into the bathroom and did my business, went in my room and changed into my street clothes while the baby was on the bed and STILL this guy stayed there. We found out that there was a Carbon monoxide leak because the furnace wasn’t working right. DAMN! No wonder we all have been sick! Good thing I’ve kept the place well ventilated or we would have been dead!

Oh well, Heres the good news. We are moving to a new apartment after all so they can do the renovations. The really fucked up news… We have to pay the same amount of rent AND sign a new 1 year lease. Everyone in the building we are moving to pays 550 a month and we are going to be paying 760 a month for the SAME layout and square footage. What kind of shit is that? WE are inconvenienced because of this and we STILL have to pay 200 more than everyone else??? WTF??

Check into local housing laws. If they’re making your apartment unlivable, it seems unlikely that they can force you to do anything. If the option is signing a new lease and paying higher rent or moving elsewhere, move.

Omg, you have a baby in an apartment with no carbon monoxide detectors???

pencilpusher, you don’t say what city you live in. Some towns here have far better tenant protection than others. I do not believe that what they are attempting to do is allowed, especially if you are moving out because your apartment is dangerous and/or uninhabitable, but you must stand your ground. My take is that your lease is void, but Please see a lawyer.

pencilpusher,
this page has something. See sections 38-12-104 Return of security deposit - Hazardous conditions. I don’t know if it’s up to date. Here’s another site , this one is Boulder. Anyway, look into your city, and get a lawyer. Check with the United Way, or dial the new social services information number 211 (if it’s available in your area) if you can’t afford one.

IMO

You must be pretty lazy if you aren’t willing to move under those circumstances. I mean, you got enough to get out of a lease but no, you are going to sign another one.

WTF my ass, you are the one signing the lease and putting up with all this shit.

Clearly, the voice of someone who’s never tried to look for a new apartment, then pack up and move, all while taking care of an infant. Idiot.

I’m sorry, but babys are not the requirement for CO detectors. What about the lives of the parents?

Not every building needs CO detectors. If it’s all electric cooking and heating, there’s no need for them at all.

Except that pencilpusher explicitly said that her furnace was found to be leaking CO, meaning it must be gas-fired. Getting a detector is very good advice, in her case.

county, I’m rapidly tiring of your repeated jerkish behavior to EVERYONE on this message board. Cut it out. Either start contributing something positive to this message board, or leave, or be shown the door.

For the Straight Dope

Yes, I realize that. I didn’t say the OP’s apartment didn’t need one.
