My completely unfounded wild-assed guess is that you were some sort of low-level spook, either CIA or DIA, probably an admin type, assigned to the DAO in some backwater embassy. I’m probably all wet, and you wouldn’t be able to admit it if it’s true, but that’s the vibe I’m getting.
Well, I’ll admit it’s a bit of an eyebrow-raiser; it’s certainly not the handle I’d recommend for anyone, up there with other “wear your bias on your sleeve” handles like One True American or The Democrat or Devout Muslem or whatever.
I mean, if The Republican wanders into Cafe Society and starts a thread about Freddie vs. Jason, some folks are going to wonder if he’s going to talk about the merits of the movie, or just rant about perceived political bias in the film.
Actually, what I really wanted was to start a thread along the lines of “What do the SDMB regulars think about this new guy, The Republican?” But I wasn’t sure what forum it’d belong in, and given the nature of his stuff so far, and the inherent volatility of all matters political in the SDMB anyway, I figure we’d end up in The Pit anyway. So I saved the mods a thread-move, while trying to explain in my OP that I don’t really have the heart to flame him or anything… though I’m sure he’ll provide plenty of ammunition soon enough. 
After all, anyone who starts a thread with a title like “How Gore and the liberals tried to steal the election” is clearly not interested in approaching the subject with a desire to debate the issue and possibly change his mind – he just wants to rant.
(Actually, it seems like there’s an influx of new die-hard conservatives on the SDMB lately – we’ve got The Republican and Krillian bouncing around, while O_o just got banned. I’d almost speculate if the board is being targeted by members of Free Republic, though that’s probably a separate thread in and of itself)

I was under the impression that the first statewide recount was called for by Florida Law … if the margin was smaller than X votes/X percent, a recount was in order regardless of the thought-victor.
That information is based on a few news broadcasts from the November/December 2000 time period in order to clear up misconceptions that Gore was calling for a recount of every single vote cast in the state purely as a stalling tactic.
The vibe I’m getting is that TR was never in the military; however, he certainly does seem to like the sound of “I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you.”
I think The Republican has the potential to be a valuable contributor to this board.
He absolutely doesn’t understand the local rules and customs, but those can be learned if he’s willing.
He would definitely benefit froma few weeks (or even days) or lurking, especially on the GD board, before posting again.
I hope he takes this advice and becomes a fresh and intellegent (and probably controversial) voice around here.

If some guy called himself “The Democrat” and came in here in the same way bashing Bush and calling the election of 2000 a sham without cites, he would have gotten some polite help about doing it right. If he then apologized in the wrong forum, he would have been politely told to go to the right one for that.
After that, there would be plenty of hearty "WELCOME!"s.
Conservatives of all stripes are targets around here. They have to be especially careful with cites. While the guys on the left are allowed to cite from any number of lefty publications, if someone on the right posts a cite from a Republican organization, magazine, web site, or think tank he’ll be responded to with scorn and lots of roll-eyes. People on the left can post outright falsehoods and get away with it, while those of us on the right are treated to continual archive searches to look for inconsistencies or things we may have said wrong years ago.
That’s just the way it is. Republican, be warned. You’re going to have to be better than average, more precise than average, and meticulous in your cites, or these guys are going to go for your throat.
