Pitting UltraVires

Quite so, the very image of gentility itself.

A polite scoundrel is still a scoundrel.

I prefer a rude truth to a polite and polished lie.

See:

His voting rights thread really demonstrated how clueless he is about racism in the US. It was the most white privilege-y thread I’ve seen in a while.

Hey, give him a break. It’s not like he lives in a state where racism is so rampant that you can’t avoid seeing it every day, like West Virginia or somewhere.

There have to be non-white people around to see most racism, and WV is 93% white. There may be the occasional odd comment, but it isn’t going to come up much in everyday life.

7% is still plenty to be able to see them, and I’m sure that UltraVires has had plenty of exposure to the racism they’re subjected to. Like, say, assigning minority defendants the most incompetent defense attorney in the country.

WTF? Do you also think that you have to have some non-straight people to see homophobia? That implies that you’ll see more homophobia in San Francisco than in, say, Wyoming.

Honestly, I don’t understand why West Virginia gets so much shit, except perhaps for showing “disloyalty” by seceding. From Virginia. To remain in the Union.

Oh, right, people there are poor. So fuck 'em.

Maybe WV of 1863 isn’t the West Virginia of today? But you already knew that.

I sure did. But you’d be surprised how historical impressions form and linger, even as the memories fade as generations pass. Think of it as a meme that started out with a solid grounding in the animosity of the Civil War’s immediate aftermath, buoyed by the lost cause myth (the idea of a large segment of free white southerners being opposed to secession sure does muddy the waters and lend itself to the possibility that maybe not everyone was alright with fighting a war for the slavers and calling it “states rights”—certainly we can’t let those be painted as good guys in all this, so they must actually be uniquely depraved and deficient, worthy of scorn, right?), and perpetuated into the present to the point that now people aren’t even sure why they must dump on West Virginia on cue, as opposed to… some other state.

And for the record, I don’t exactly endorse regionalism and the like, but when I see it, I am especially troubled by the baggage that gets heaped on West Virginia, of all places. If we’re going to shit on one state more than others, might we at least pick one that fought a war to preserve slavery?

Florida man, where are you when we need you?

Mar-a-lago?

The only alternative to racism is stupidity. Repbilicans were never bringing coal jobs back, so it is giving them the benefit of the doubt that Obama’s race was the cause of their hard right swing and not that they’re drooling morons. Of course they are not mutually exclusive, and it doesn’t apply to all voters, yada yada

I’m curious as to what shit you think that West Virginia is getting in this thread.

I pity West Virginia, to some extent, as it is unique in being the home to the pittee of this thread, but other than that, I’m not really seeing what it is that you have come in to complain about.

I have a lot of relatives on my mom’s side in West Virginia. I’m descended from a lot of West Virginians. I’ve never been there though. I did grow up hearing slurs against the state, however, from my hoity-toity relatives from fancy Ohio.

I don’t have time to dig up the post right now, but he has posted that he’s never personally seen racism once in the criminal justice system. He did allow that it may happen in rare cases.

Huh?

I don’t recall him mentioning having a lot of minorities as clients.

I’ve never stayed, but if you are driving from Ohio to the east coast, you have to pass through it about 37 times.

You should hear what we say about Michigan.

Oh yeah, you don’t bring up Michigan around my mom.

I was most recently replying to an exchange that included this assertion:

Maybe there are metrics out there somewhere establishing West Virginia as an exceptionally racist state (keeping in mind we have so many other states to choose from), but in general I am opposed to singling out WV for ridicule just off-hand. I am perhaps primed, reflexively, to associate anti-WV sentiment as stemming, however far removed, from a meme that originated thanks in part to “proud Southern society” (the Lost Cause movement) wanting to scoff at hillbillies and the like who showed them, point of fact, no, poor white folks don’t have to secede just so some assholes in other parts of the state can keep people as slaves. This is perhaps owing to my time living in western Virginia, where the Lost Cause myth was alive and well.
