Appreciate the directions. Sounds like is darn near Wexford.
If not beer, what should I bring?
After coming down 28, hop onto 8 North and continue for maybe 5 miles. I’m not really sure HOW far, but you’ll come to a sign to North Park, it’ll be a left turn. It’s right near where 8 meets the Turnpike. That will take you past Wildwood, then you’ll get to an intersection with a light. This is the same intersection as the 2nd to last instruction on my directions, except from the opposite way. Make a right at the light, then the next left, right after the bridge.
There may be a better way, but I’m not really sure. That’s the way I’d take, however.
And, you may be able to bring beer, I’m just not sure yet. I’ll let you know tomorrow or saturday, whenever I get a chance to stop out there. If we have to reserve a pavillion or grove to have somewhere to sit and eat, I’ll do so and let you know where it is. Otherwise, we should be fine at the boat house.
Oh, and has Mrs. Phan been lamenting the loss of our great Kordell?
Have you been reading my posts in the “He Hate Me, He Hate Me Not” SDMB football league?
Kordell Stewart was the fly in the ointment; we hope Tommmy Maddox isn’t a flash in the pan. Need any more metaphors?
Good directions; I remember the way now.
So, how many are coming? I only know of one Doper near me, but we can give someone a ride there (from the east) is that’s the deciding factor.
I guess a smilie was in order for that last comment, but really - I figured lementing and Kordell in the same sentence would’ve tipped off the sarcasm. He’s a good athlete, that goat bite just threw off his aim.
I’m coming from either the north or Robinson. If anyone needs a right from around there, let me know. If you’re somewhere else and need a ride, I can probably get you there too.
I don’t think alcohol would be a problem-we always had it at family reunions when I was a kid (that’s where we had them, at North Park).
But then again, you might have had to have a license when renting the groves and such, so I don’t know.
Someone else was teasing me that Kordell would probably be available, since I draft 12th out of 14. I was trash talking back to them. (I’ve had a problem in the past of taking it personally; I’ve been working on a thicker skin.) We’ll discuss it.
Did anyone know that Sat., Aug. 2 is Friendship Day? That’s what my bank’s calendar says, anyway. Here’s to our Friendship Day PIttsburgh Mini-Dopefest.
I’ll post after the weekend; I may have a pile of leftover food and supplies from Sunday’s reunion to donate to the cause.
Who else is in?
Just wanted to give everyone a non-update. Apparently my schedule doesn’t jive with North Park’s, so the office was closed when I got there today. Who closes before 5pm?
Anyways, groves were open today when I went, so I will call monday, first thing, and get us one. While there is a playground at the Boat House, there are only a few benches, not much in the way of tables for eating.
I’ll be back Monday with which grove we’ll meet at.
Cool-then we’ll have to get everyone’s e-mails, so we can get in touch.
And we HAVE to decide what we’re bringing.
My email is john@vgonetwork.com - I will bring soda and paper ware (plates, forks and the like). I may also bring some form of cookie substance, since I’ll be at Costco to pick up the soda. They have really awesome cookies.
I’ll leave a note on this thread and I’ll e-mail everyone who leaves their mail in the thread with all the specific info on the grove once I have it.
Also, bring anyone you like with you, as there will probably be plenty of food and drink and people to hang out with. If anyone wants to bring grillable items, hamburgers or hotdogs, I’ll make sure we have a fire.
What are you bringing, Guin?
Any room for an old fart over there?
I get off work at 5pm on Sat. Two hour drive to Pittsburgh.
What cna I bring?
Someone HAD to come over from Ohio, just to keep you obnoxious Steeler Fans in line.
By the way, just what HAVE you done since the 1970’s?
Send me directions.
Where you coming from exactly, samclem? Turnpike, 270/70, somewhere more north? Let me know what way you head towards us and I’ll get you the rest of the way.
I won’t really defend the Steelers, I just watch for pure entertainment value, but good luck defending the Browns or the Bengels. Maybe you should say you’re from Detroit so you’ve got better ground to stand on.
As another note, I found out today that you can’t reserve a grove over the phone. Joy of joys. My brother is going out today if he wakes in time, if not, I’ll be there bright and early before work tomorrow, picking out our spot.
Speaking of which, is a license for alchohol important to everyone? If so, I can get it, I think it’s an extra 30$, which isn’t too bad. If no one is planning on drinking, I’ll skip it, if you want beer, make sure you let me know soon.
Official Pittsburgh Party Grove
Ok, I have the grove. There’s no liquer license yet, but if there is support for beer, let me know, I think I can get the license at any time. It’s easy to find, too, it’s on the road that goes around the like, Lake Shore I believe.
Little Mama is where we’ll all be meeting, starting around 3pm. You can show up early if you like, we’ve got the grove all day, starting at 11am and going until midnight when the park closes. The reservation is under Lange.
samclem, I know you need directions still. Anyone else need them? I’ll make sure to give you exact directions from the boat house once I drive to the grove, I’ve not yet actually driven there.
See you Saturday.
Well, I welcome any Dopers, but if you accuse me of starting fights at the stadium because I’m a Steeler fan we’ll have problems. Mrs. 'phan will have more to say.
(j/k samclem, old farts are welcome- I’m on the cusp.)
Seriously, then, I do have leftover supplies from the family reunion (washed out at 3:30.) No food, but plenty of supplies- and games. Frisbee, football, wiffle ball, Bingo, poker (w/chips)… any other suggestions?
My email is in my profile. Who’s keeping the list of participants?
So far, my unofficial count from this thread and people I know personally.
HideoHo
Six-O
Guinastasia
Steelerphamily
Isosleepy
samclem
Siege
Medea’s Child
mrblue
Teddust
Scylla
Esprix
The last two aren’t actually coming, I just know they do vanity searches on a regular basis and they’re both going to be highly confused as to why THIS thread pops up. Then, the conversation that ensues will ensure that this thread stays on the first page so I don’t have to check in as often. When lurkers strike, on Fox.
I’ll also be bringing a few friends of mine to bring up the numbers and to make sure we’ve got enough people for kick ball or whatever is going on. If you’ve got a few friends looking for a nice afternoon in the park, bring them. I’ll make sure to keep my scary friends at home, though.
Actually, I just did a Mapquest.
Basically, Northpark is between Eastpark and Westpark? How’m I doin’ being from Ohio?
You’re doing well enough, and by well enough, I mean for someone from Ohio. If you fear getting lost, e-mail me and I can give you my cell # and you can call once you get close, so long as you’re not planning on getting there too much before three. I can’t possibly wake up before 2pm on a saturday.
As for the food so far, we’ve got Sausage Rolls and maybe some kind of dessert thing from Siege, random recipe from Guin, Amstel Light from Isosleepy (alcohol will be ok), Soda and Cookies from me, possibly vegetarian lasagna from myself and my friend I’m bringing and a whole lotta games from steelerphan.
For those of you who are not cooking oriented, we still need chips, dip, snacky foods and whatever else you feel makes a picnic a good picnic. Also, there’s got to be more than 10 Pittsburghers (and honorary ones) on the board who are available.
Again, I’ll be there by about 7. It’s a flat 2 hour drive for me.
I’ll be glad to bring food. Hell, I’ll even make something. I can make the best baked beans you ever ate. I make a killer chicken with bow-tie pasta and sun-dried tomatoes, but it’s better warm than cold. Should I shoot for dessert type things?
Guess I"ll have to start thinking seriously about food.
Your offer of a cell phone number when I get close sounds good. Us senior citizens don’t function well after the light gets low.
Is that for sure? Since I need alcohol for :::cough, cough::: medicinal purposes, I will be glad to bring some good stuff from Ohio. No Iron City for this kid.
Is there a permit required? Cost? I’ll be glag to chip in.
I was just skimming the thread when I saw your list, and I got excited about meeting Scylla and Esprix- not to demean anyone, as I am also looking forward to meeting everyone else- but it wasn’t meant to be? They have to come, now…
samclem, we would have had this in South Park- but Kenny got killed the last time, and Cartman ate all the food.
Is there a grill available? I could bring Wally burgers* and hotdogs; if not I’ll grill some chicken here and bring it along. The mrs. (I gotta get her to sign up here so she can choose a nickname) will want to bring brewskis, too.
- Wal-mart burgers. No one complained on Sunday.
Walmart burgers? That’s almost blasphemy, but if you want, I’ve got a portable grill that works pretty well. I can bring it. Just don’t forget the condements (read: Heinz).
Cost for the alchohol permit is 30$. If you have a few bucks to throw in, cool. If not, no big deal, don’t worry about it. I’m not providing the alcohol, so if you want to drink, you gotta bring it yourself. I’m sure sam has a big enough vehicle to bring the proper amounts of imbibing fluid. If not, Isosleepy will help with it.
As a note, to get to the grove, go past the Boat House and make a left onto Lake Shore Drive. Just keep driving till you see it. It’s on the opposite side of the road from the lake. Pretty simple.
