No. But the two stupid little keys are right next to each other.
I tip everyone. I tip the postal carrier, who now brings every package to my door, instead of leaving them in the management office; the people who clean the hallways in my building, who wipe down my door and no one else’s (not part of their job, and not something I requested), and pick up my mat to mop under it instead of mopping around it. I tip Uber drivers, I tip the guys who vacuum and wipe down my car at the car wash, and when I arrive, they line up to do my car.
I don’t do it for the service, though-- that’s just a happy after-effect. It’s just what I think is the right thing to do. A lot of people work hard for not a lot of money, and I want to make their days a little better.
We’ve ordered pizza from the same place almost every Friday night for ten years. Its gaming night, and our gaming group is big, so it isn’t unusual for us to get $100 worth of pizza. And we tip well - in excess of 20% on the credit card (so you know its coming when you get the order) - and on a cold Minnesota night, you’ll see a $5 bill slipped in your hand.
We are so known for this at the pizza shop we use that when we order, our order usually gets priority and we’ve been told they fight over the delivery.
About two months ago they screwed up - big. We put in our order and waited. After an hour we called and were told it was on its way. After another half hour we were told that they messed up, and the pizzas never got delivered and they were remaking our pizza and it would be here in half an hour. After another 40 minutes, we were told that there was an order sitting there, but no one knew whose it was, so they’d ignored it.
We spoke to the manager - apparently, she knew exactly who was working the phone, she made apologies, credited us the pizza and delivered it.
But we haven’t ordered from them since. Five years of consistent customer gone in one night.
Now, could they have gotten our business back - yeah, give us the next order free as well - and then do your normal awesome job of delivery. You are talking about $5000 a year in business for a small pizza place from a single customer.
There are half a dozen places around here that will deliver a pizza. Its a competitive market, don’t throw customers away.
Dunno, might do. As I’ve already said, I only order delivery pizza when I’m on my own so my order’s only ever about 15 quid, so giving the guy a 3 quid tip is hardly going to break me.
What can I tell you? I like to tip my pizza (or whatever) delivery driver. I like the tiny pleasantry of handing the guy a few coins out of the change jar. I like the fleeting bit of human interaction. I like sharing.
I give the refuse collectors a tenner at Christmas too, and I made our cleaning lady a food hamper last year, that must really fucking freak you out.
Oh, and notice I’ve not criticised anyone here for not tipping.
